My Jewish Family
My background, the combination of being Jewish and Ecuadorian as well as the people whose influence have shaped who I am today, have instilled in me a sense of morality, compassion, and tolerance. My family has always been supportive, encouraging me to explore my surroundings and take on greater challenges so that I can go outside of my comfort zone and experience all that I can be. All my life I have celebrated the holidays and traditions associated with my religion and ethnicity, thus gaining a unique perspective on the differences and similarities between them. When I visit my Bubby for Chanukah, we eat potato latkes, light the menorahs, and play with dreidels. During Christmas at Grandma’s house, we decorate the tree, eat empanadas, and

Political, economic and historical events created a lot of inequalities in society towards different races and classes of people, but the Jewish people faced a lot of discrimination. One of the main reasons Herzl wanted to create this Jewish state was because of the constant violence and attacks Jewish people were facing from mainstream European groups. Herzl describes how Jews constantly faced “attacks in parliaments, in assemblies, in the press, in the pulpit, in the street”, and explains how often many Jews “are put to death”. Jewish people suffered and lost their lives as a result of this violence and many governments in Europe also did very little to stop this abuse from being committed against hundreds of Jews. This is significant as…

Branded Nation was written by James B. Twitchell a professor of marketing and English at University of Florida. In his book he wrote about institutions that are looked up upon by the public as ones that are outside the area of organizations that sell merchandises and services. These institutions are not traditionally connected with marketing, or even branding, but, as you start to read through the book you soon realize they are. The three institutions in his book are, the church, the university, and the museum. . These organizations are not perceived to be associate with the world of advertising and fierce marketing. Twitchell argues that the need for salvation, which he calls a human 'epiphany', becomes the emotional product of religion. Twitchell says that all culture "comes to us through a commercial process of story-telling called branding."(Twitchell 2).…

In our Jewish community, we aren’t really that Jewish. We might follow the religion, but we don’t all pray when we should, and we aren’t all people who don’t sin. Of course none of us are perfect, but in our community being a perfect Jew isn’t one of the priorities. Our priorities include success in school, sports, and everything that we try to accomplish in life. In Anatevka, those are extra activities that most don’t get to undertake in their lifetime. They spend their days either helping their fathers with work, or they help their mothers with the chores around the house. In order to find marriage and start a family in Anatevka, the father has to approve and the daughter has little to no say. In modern days, kids can choose who they want…

The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the various barriers faced by grandparent caregivers. Recent studies indicate that the percentage of grandparent caregiver has increased substantially in 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau (Simmons & Dye, 2003) reported that 3.6% (5.8 million) of adults 30 years and older were living with a grandchild younger than 18years old (2.4 million) of whom were responsible for raising their grandchildren. Part I: In some ways I guess you could say I am not very cultured, in that sense there is not a wide variety of cultural influences around me. With that being said, my family still has a large assortment of different traditions we do from decorating the tree at Christmas to going up to my grandparents house for Thanksgiving and making the same dishes every year. The area I live in is just not very diverse, it never has been. I live in Alpharetta, Georgia where the majority is white people and somewhat upper class. I consider my family to be middle class but more on the upper side. We live in a nice house in a safe neighborhood near very good schools. I went to the same high school for three years before a new…

A radiant sun sparkled in a deep blue sky, birds chirped, bees buzzed, and an occasional breeze of fresh cool air drifted by, refreshing the image of an already flawless setting. There could not have been a better day to celebrate the Fourth of July with a picnic at the park, which is always a fascinating sight to behold when it involves my family. My dad’s Jewish background and my mom’s Mexican heritage form a very rare and atypical mix that is most definitely an acquired taste. I can remember sitting down when all of a sudden a weird sensation hit my nostrils as the wind carried the smell of both enchiladas and gefilte fish into my nasal cavity, definitely an acquired scent. The crammed table contained so many delicacies and unique dishes that it seemed as though I were in the middle of two completely different worlds trying to combine into one unified culture. For me, however, there has always been some tension between both sides of my family when they come face to face, and I have always found it difficult to completely immerse myself in both lifestyles.…

The community I live and work with is all sorts of people, from young 18 y/o up to them in their late 70’s. They all come from different ethnic background which means they all have different believes, lifestyles and social and cultural identities as well. I come originally from Poland, I was born in a Christian family however I would consider myself as atheist, as I don’t believe in any god. I know people in my community that are Christian, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Buddhism. We all have different interests and lifestyles, most of the people that I know are married couples or are in the relationship and there is a huge difference in their lifestyle comparing to the single people, they have more responsibilities such as children or family home. We all enjoy going out to town, some of us like sports such as judo, some others like to have a gym work out instead. There is also a group of people that likes to get together and go paintballing every few weeks. We all have our own interests as well, we listen to different music, have different culinary taste and have different fashion styles. There are people that enjoys the Saturday in the theatre when others like to have a night out in the club or a weekend at home with family. We all lead different lifestyles which is mainly determined by our age and social class and culture identity. Some people lead an active lifestyle, others prefer stay at home.…

Growing up with divorced parents from two radically different cultures was at first difficult. My mother’s family was from Peru, while my father’s was from Bangladesh. In my young mind, there was an internal struggle with what my identity actually consisted of. I wasn’t wholly from one culture or the other, and felt like a black sheep when interacting with either side of my family. Due to this, I attempted to keep these cultures partitioned. At the time, they were different portions of my life that simply couldn’t intermix. This mentality in turn led me to foolishly shy away from my joint heritage. I kept myself enclosed in a box, blind to the beauty of my surrounding culture. However, as time progressed, I knew I had to make a change in my understanding.…
