My Mission Trip To Guatemala
My faith has always been very important to me, but it was not until I experienced a mission trip to Guatemala that faith really impacted me as a person. At first, I signed up for the trip to spend time with my friends and to go abroad on my birthday. However, from the moment I set foot in Guatemala, my faith was impacted and my view on the world completely changed. This trip helped me transition into adulthood by strengthening my faith, giving me a newfound gratitude for all that God has given me, and helping me find a different perspective on happiness.
During the trip, I spent most of my time at an orphanage called Agua Viva in Antigua, Guatemala. The mission was to find God in my daily life, whether it was through the kids and my peers, or through the warm welcoming sense of community in Agua Viva. Our goal was to help improve their community by spending time with the kids and working on various projects for the orphanage. The children at the orphanage had a tremendous impact upon me because they were so incredibly happy with so little. Each child was given a single drawer for all of his or her personal belongings, such as clothes, shoes, and homework. I reflected on my own home, where I have my own room with multiple dressers that are completely full of my clothes and belongings. In this way, this trip taught me to be

Despite the language barrier, I was still able to form a unique bond with him. We sat together every day for each meal and communicated about his school day, his family, and even which girls he liked in the orphanage. I cherished all of my interactions with him. He felt like the younger brother that I had always wanted. By becoming close with Kevin, I learned what it means to me a mentor and provide guidance for a younger child in need. Although I only spent one week with him, I believe that I helped teach him lessons that will last a

If you knew me you would know that my culture forms part of who I am. I’ve grown in a Hispanic household and an important aspect of my life is my Guatemalan culture. Right before I would go to bed my parents would speak about Guatemala and its beauties. My dad's favorite memory was walking to school, listening to the silence surrounding him. What he loved the most about Guatemala was when Christmas came. On Christmas Day, women would dress in beautiful colorful clothes to dance to the rhythm of the music. When he remembers those memories it seems that he is transported back to that time and place. He always wished for that day to never end because those were the few days he could act as a normal child. After that he would go back to his normal…

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

I would like to say I know Spanish, after four years of studying in high school and multiple trips to South and Central America, yet it seems every time I leave the States, I find myself in a frantic struggle to process the words I know and figure out the meanings of the ones I do not. Sometimes this simply means missing out on a few insignificant details, other times it can seriously complicate life.…

Think of what you had for breakfast, then lunch, now dinner. What if out of the three meals a day you only had the chance to have two, if that. What if you're still under the age of 13 and you had to take over the role of one parent, maybe both for the day because they work in the fields or cleaning houses to be able to pay rent and buy food. So you're stuck taking care of babies, cooking, and somehow still managing to finish your schoolwork. This is what life in the small community of Lake Worth, Florida is like. Knowing about this motivated me to get more involved and help the Guatemalan community through service.…

In (John 3:16) “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that we could have everlasting life.” This gave me the understanding, that no matter what I am going through in life and all the things that I may have to give up for someone else is for a good cause. Having this faith in my heart makes me feel very spiritual. I have never had any doubt the Lord existing in this world. When I am lonely, depress, or stressing about things I have no control over, I know I can call on the Lord to get me through these emotions that I am experiencing.…

This past summer I had the incredible opportunity to go on a mission trip in Ecuador where I worked in an orphanage partaking in labor work, as well as, traveled out into the cities bordering Quito to organize VBSs (vacation bible schools)in startup churches . In beginning of the trip I expected the work I would participate in would be life changing to those in its wake. My expectations were highly set and the outcome did not match up; in fact, the outcome was quite the opposite. In the short week I spent in Ecuador, I realized almost immediately that the problems that needed to be mended were much larger than a group of fifty people could overcome in one week. There was so much need, and an insufficient amount of resources to provide for it. Nevertheless, I was…

All this came about because of a few passionate people who were willing to follow God’s call and make a difference. This is something that has caused me to reflect upon my own life and my passions. I have always had a passion for working with kids, which is why I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember, but after my trip to Haiti, I realized God had touched my heart for missions as well. Even though everything about Haiti was out of my comfort zone, it felt so right at the same time, and I was gripped with a connection to the people of Haiti that made it difficult to…

When I was in the eighth grade I went on a weeklong mission trip with my youth group to Houston, Texas. This trip was a turning point in my life spiritually and mentally, completely changing my thought process of inner city missions at the time. There is a ministry there called CSM that invites youth groups to come and they will take the group to certain places in the city where they can serve and get a feel for the need there and many places. This trip was very impacting for me and I am still looking back on it and realizing the benefits.…
