According to Yackel in “My Mother Never Worked” (back ground on social security) social security is a federal insurance program that requires workers to contribute a percentage of their wages to a fund that they become unemployed due to disability. Although the law has been challenged in the courts the survivors of a homemaker who has never been a wage earner are still not entitled to a social security death benefit. Although her mother never had an job paying a wage she still worked and took care of the home, I believe that it’s quite unfair for the ones who do so much at home but never get recognized for anything and cannot even get an social security check.
