My Nursing Goals
A personal goal of mine is to earn my Master of Science in Nursing, specializing in the role of a Family Nurse Practitioner. Currently, I work as a registered nurse and I enjoy my current role, providing bedside care and education to patients. However, as previously stated, I aspire to further my education and advance my career. My healthcare journey started over a decade ago when my mother became ill. Throughout her illness we visited numerous clinics, where we encountered someone from almost every aspect of the health profession, from registrars to physicians. I could see the difference it made to her when someone took the time to listen and support her, this most often was a nurse. A promise to my mother and seeing the outstanding …show more content…
My long-term goals were to become employed in a specialty of nursing that I enjoyed and obtain my bachelor’s degree. While I have been able to successfully mark off those items on my goals list, I have noticed that completing these goals lead to other items being added to the list! When I began this journey I never realized that my short-term and long-term goals would continue to evolve. Today instead of being finished with my goals list, I aspire to continue forward. I believe with the experience that I have obtained working as a registered nurse, I will be able to provide a holistic perspective that is unique to nurse practitioners. I strive to be like the nurses that helped mold my career choice and truly want to make a difference in the lives of my patients and their families. Therefore, my short-term goal is to become a family nurse practitioner. Long-term goals are to help give back to my community by providing resources and education to rural areas. After completing my education, I intend on becoming an active member of the nurse practitioner’s association, as well as aiding in providing care in rural communities, like my own, and taking part in primary care initiatives in efforts to better the health of my

My personal nursing mission statement is changing and developing as my career advances, however, one core piece will remain constant. I will strive to provide the best, safest, most ethical and compassionate nursing care that I can for all patients and family members with whom I come in contact. I began my post-high school academic career as an accounting major. I enjoyed the challenge of manipulating a report until I had balanced. I thought I had found my calling. As my first semester was nearing an end, I found myself contemplating the thought of sitting behind a desk all day. I wondered if I would find fulfillment in this work as a career? The more I pondered this thought, the more I realized that this was not the right career path for me. I saw images of the medical assistant program in the catalog at the school where I was attending. I could not shake the thought of the medical field for a profession. I attained my medical assistant degree and worked in the field for 10 years. The longer I worked, the more I realized that there was more that I wanted to do, but my current degree restricted me from going further. I researched nursing school programs and selected one with a night/weekend program that would allow me to continue working full-time during my studies. I have a family that I needed to continue to provide for and this seemed to be the best fit. My nursing school decision was fortified when I was selected for an award by the nursing faculty from all four semesters for excellence in the clinical setting. After graduation, I began my nursing career working as a case manager for orthopedic worker’s compensation patients. During this time I gained critical knowledge of the importance of clear documentation, the ever-changing requirements of insurance companies and an extra measure of compassion for…

Goal setting is an important part of my career with my personal and my professional development planning because it practices good habits and discipline. It shows that I'm consistent and able to manage my skills. Its easy to say that in 4 years I will be a nurse getting paid a good salary . However, achieving this goal isn't so easy. The first requirement in becoming a registered nurse is to obtain the proper education. To start with a school that has somewhat of a medical field, like Franklin Police & Fire high school the school I currently attend. I also plan to be an advocate and an educator to my rural community where there is a need for FNP. There is a severe shortage of primary care physicians in my rural area of southern Oklahoma. Therefore since that time I want to make a difference on the people who have to be hospitalized, helping them to recover. Although I would like to specialize with infants and children because they have a lower immune system and those are the most fundamental years of their lives.…

At the beginning of the term I reflected on my successes and downfalls from the previous term and developed goals. My first goal was to complete the assessment portion of patient care in one appointment by the end of the term. I was able to accomplish this goal right away, and with almost every patient I saw, which I am proud of. My second goal was to accurately chart restorations, using detailed surfaces, and other dental appliances. Again, I was able to achieve this goal and as a result became much better at dental charting. My final goal was to detect and remove calculus at 75% accuracy, which I was also able to accomplish by the end of the term.…
