Aside from medicine, I have a deep passion for soccer. I grew up playing soccer with my friends in the streets of Lebanon where regardless of one’s religion, socioeconomic status, or education level everyone has one thing in common: their passion for soccer. As a junior in high school, I developed a proposal to my school board with the purpose of establishing a team at our school and playing organized tournaments with other local schools. Through this sport, I learned the essence of teamwork and collaboration. Being the captain of the soccer team highlighted the importance of effective communication and positive vibes between the whole team. Waking up at five a.m. to go to a contest or even to travel is not what most teenagers would want to do on a Saturday morning. There are a few times when being in the FFA is not always smooth sailing. Waking up to put on the blue jacket and official dress is not what I pictured doing for the next 3 months. Wanting to run for state office, I soon found out that it was sometimes necessary to do. My decision to run for state officer in FFA has been caused through many things, the present officers and my advisors encouraging me, it being a great way to develop my leadership skills, and my passion for FFA.…

The knowledge I have gained from being a part of the athletic community is very vast and I would argue that is why I am a member of the discourse community. I earned my first gold medal when I was in the second grade for winning the 50 yard dash. That was a day that I will never forget. Winning that race motivated me to participate in sports more often and take keen interest in learning more about the athletic community. Since then, I learned how to train for many different sports my school offered. I trained for running, long jump, javelin throw, discuss throw, and table tennis. I learned the basic techniques of these sports and mastered them with ease. I remember clearly how I was able to beat my own friend who had taught me how to play table tennis. I took part in many competitions such as the state tournament for table tennis. There, the other competitors were at times so much better than me. I carefully examined the other players’ style, understood my own mistakes and practiced them to perfection. I developed my skills through practice as my knees and arms grew to strengthen and coordinate better. But later in my high school, winning alone wasn’t enough for me. I was motivated to learn the developmental history of each sport and its origin.…

The playful jests and inevitable clashes leaving me searching for competition as these times became less and less frequent. It was for this reason that soccer took such a firm grip on me. It provided an outlet for the built-up need for struggle that had been fostered in my younger years. Although I had been in and around the game for virtually all my life, I only truly started getting into it as I was unable to find the healthy competition at home. In fact, this has led me to an even greater interest in the game than almost anything I had done before. The sport has helped me to accept failure both on and off the field as a perfectly normal occurrence in anything. While it is of course natural to feel a sense of disappointment with failure, the beautiful game has taught me to move on and look forward, not back. This important lesson took a long time in learning too, as I often refused to accept the failures already long gone. This too often manifested in undesirable actions and more regrets, but with the discovery of soccer and its intricacies, I am in a far better place than I was then. Soccer has had a profound impact on all aspects of my life, from my obsession with sports analysis to my dedication to whatever cause. Sport has taught me far too many valuable lessons to disregard in any discussion of the creation of my…
