Regarding individual responsibility, my personal belief is that it is up to the individual once given the proper support, to maintain their lives in a productive way and not to abuse the social service system. I would not expect them to be able to do this alone, however, and when the individual does need help, I believe society should assist them in the areas where help is needed for them to be self-reliant. I think that by changing policies and programs in the macro system to realistically fit the needs of people, it will contribute to promoting change within the microsystem.
The ideology of the American people has a strong belief that each individual is responsible for their status in their life. Personal choices made by individuals attribute to lifestyle and their social, economic situation.
I disagree with this ideology and believe that it is our society’s responsibility help all people who are in need of public assistance services. Not all individuals in need of aid is a result of their choices. Those who have lived a privileged life may have had a substantial change in circumstances that drastically changed and all of a sudden find they are in need of help of social welfare programs. This conflicting ideology changes over the course of time depending on what circumstances are occurring. During the 911, many lives were impacted and changed forever due to the terrorist attacks on the US. During this period. American Society came together as whole to support help individuals and families who lost loved ones. In times of community and society turbulence, the American people want social welfare programs to take the lead and step in to provide social welfare services, yet they view individuals using the same services as burdens on society.
I feel that it is society's responsibility to try and find a way to help all people in society with policies that are practical and realistic to the needs of the individuals receiving aid.Social welfare programs should be examined and analyzed to make sure they are not setting up unrealistic, unattainable demands that would set a person up for failure.
