My Practice Assessment At The Kingstown Technical Institute: Caleab Nicholls
My practice assessment was done at the Kingstown Technical Institute, affectionately called KTI. KTI is a semi-enclosed facility located next door to the Bishops College School with entrance leading from the Wilson Hill road. The institution prepares students who journey from various schools, for the world of work by offering theory and practical learning that is related to a specific trade or occupation. The two storey structure of KTI consists of five classrooms; eight labs; eight toilets, including the toilets for staff; a staffroom and an office.
The Kingstown Technical Institute is a bit too small to accommodate the number of schools that attend class, therefore there is a mixture of different schools that make up the classes. Also, some

Caleab is a repeater of almost every form he has been in. At the age of eighteen years, he is a student of the Intermediate High School in the fourth form. Caleab’s mother says that she does not know what else to do with him so she is just going to give up. Due to what his mother said, Caleab is of the view that his mother does not believe in him so he also wants to give up by stating that it makes no sense for him to try. With this awareness I came to realize that his attitude towards learning was very poor.
For a student at his age, Caleab was slower than his classmates, his reading level was below average and he was easily distracted which I believe assisted in him being a repeater. Due to the fact that his comprehension ability is below that of the expected level he does not understand certain concepts that are taught in the class so at times he tends to become disruptive by talking to other students or speaking out of turn. To deal with this disruptive behavior I often gave him tasks to do such as cleaning the board or handing out papers or I would call on him to help with sticking up my charts as he was much taller than I was. I also used the name dropping classroom management technique, calling his name while I speak to gain his attention. By doing this his attention is channeled toward positive activities and his misbehavior is

There are various classroom management techniques such as name dropping, environmental control, nonverbal cuing, modeling, focusing and keeping students engaged among others. To ensure that there is efficient classroom management I used various techniques named above, however, keeping my students engaged was the technique I concentrated on, this gave me control over the whole class. I used the engagement technique most of the time in order to lessen the amount of students’ disruptions and increase lack of interest during my

I selected my student from one of my students that I viewed to have some of the worst behavior in the class. I am at Bond Elementary School which is an intercity school. Most of the school’s student population comes from subsidized housing (the projects). I am in a first grade class of nineteen students. While performing my duties at in Mrs. J Williams Classroom I became very eager to observe as well as work with a student by the name of Ja’Von W. Ja’Von is a six year old, I recently found out that his mother is on drugs and is being supported by his sixteen year old brother. Many of the students that I have observed in the classroom have had behavior problems and issues with their academics especially reading, but Ja’Von seemed to stick out more than the other students did. While the other students would be engaging in reading activities, Ja’Von would constantly disrupt other students that were engaged in their reading lessons. He also seemed to have issues with their cooperating teacher Mrs. J. Williams. During a conversation with Mrs. J. Williams she noted that this was a frequent and on going thing with this particular student. When I decided to work with Ja’Von, one of the first activities that I wanted to engage in was her reading aloud to me. It dawned on me that the student’s behavior problem was his difficulty to read. Ja’Von was missing the basic skills that she needed in order to read with fluency as well as read with understanding. I felt that this would be a great opportunity for me to help him with his reading but it will also make for a good behavior change project.…

The objective of this paper is to present my personal ideas on how to have effective classroom management. To run an effective classroom, the teacher should have a well developed classroom management plan that should be utilized at all times. A well thought out classroom management plan will not only be a major contributor to your own success as a teacher but it will also help promote your students ability to learn in the classroom. A classroom management plan should be a tool that is not always set in stone but something should be revised when necessary to get the most out of students each and every year.…

As a teacher, I believe you need to set the tone of the classroom and let them know that you are in control. The medium or atmosphere of the classroom needs to be accepting and eager to learn. All of the classes that I had observed, had great classroom atmospheres. By saying "great classroom atmospheres", I mean that all the students were attentive to the teacher, eager to learn, asking questions and that no one person in the…

I believe it’s more important to find ways to provide the learning supports the students need when they are not doing well at school. We need to figure out the root cause of the student’s poor performance in school and then address it accordingly. Was it due to inappropriate forms of instruction or would it be due to outside stresses. If it’s due to inappropriate instruction, we can find ways to adapt to the student’s learning style and then instruct accordingly. If more support is needed we can also provide one on one help after school as well. If it’s due to family stress, we will schedule a meeting with the student’s parents and address it at the meeting. At last, I would also convey to his third grade teacher about his situation and what he needs to work on in order to catch up with his peers. If the root cause is not addressed properly, retain the student for one more year might show some temporarily academic improvement, but the student is most likely to lag behind again in subsequent years. I suggest we look deeper into the student’s situation and provide the necessary support needed to do well in the…

This is very much an interactive teaching style. The teacher should have a sound knowledge of their subject and be of such a nature to encourage participation in an active and meaningful way. Pupil behavior is jointly controlled by the teacher and the learners. This management style requires the teacher to maintain a balance between the task aspect and the human aspect. There are more advantages than disadvantages with some advantages being:…
