Civilians have the responsibility of voting, paying taxes, serving jury duty, following the laws of the government, and defending the constitution. Though these tasks are not as dire as those that military men and women endure, these responsibilities are still crucial to the success of our country. Without civilians performing these responsibilities, America would be plagued with turmoil and poverty. We are fortunate to have such hard working men and women who make and deliver goods and strive to keep America’s economy in working order. We are fortunate to have skilled engineers who keep America looking to the future. We are fortunate to have talented scientists and doctors who work to keep America clean of disease that we hear of from many third world countries. We are fortunate to have the most dedicated teachers and professors who seek to educate our young generations so that they may grow up and make a positive impact on our society. America is fortunate to have such dedicated citizens undertaking the responsibility of keeping America at the top. Thomas Paine, one of our forefathers, stated that “Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it.” The most important responsibility that civilians bear is the never ending respect and honor we must devote to our veterans.
