Live for what tomorrow has to bring, not what yesterday has taken away.”
These wise words, penned by an unknown author, have a direct effect on my responsibilities to America. I know that as I mature, my responsibilities will increase as my vision for America grows. However, I believe that these core responsibilities will remain and that they will enable me to be a responsible contributor to all that America can and will be.
First of all, it is my responsibility to hope for a better tomorrow. Approximately 395 years ago, the Pilgrims landed on a strange land that we call America. They came, believing in and hoping for the life that they dreamed of. Ever since then, people have come with that shared hope – a hope “for what tomorrow will bring, not for what yesterday has taken away.” I am certain that the Pilgrims and immigrants who came to America held tightly to this vision. They were filled with the hope that this “New World” would offer them a better way of life. Here, they hoped for a chance to dream and for a chance to believe in their future. When I think about all of those who have gone before me, all who have sacrificed and fought and persevered and yet have continued to hope and dream in a better America, I realize that they did not let the fear of their past affect the promise of their future. They did not give up living for the promise of the future. I realize that if I am going to be a part of this country, then I had better do the same. So many brave people have sacrificed to make America what it is today. They began with, and held tightly to, a hope in all that we could be. They sought and fought for freedom, safety, equality, liberty, and justice for all. And, they did not
