on these things forms a desire in my heart to give back to the ones who devoted their lives to America, and to the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice, their life. As a citizen, my duty as a citizen is to respect the Flag of the United States of America, and the National Anthem because they honor the history and principles our country was founded upon. Thirdly, my right as a fellow American is to submit to all laws enforced by authorities because they were made to help and protect us.
Finally, my obligation to America is to serve all Law Enforcement Officers and Veterans for their sacrifices which allowed America to become the amazing country that it is today. All of these things that I have listed above, all fall under one word, Patriotism. Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “True patriotism springs from a belief in the dignity of the individual, freedom and equality not only for Americans but for all people on earth, universal brotherhood and good will and a constant and earnest striving toward the principles and ideals on which this country was founded.” This statement that Mrs. Roosevelt said is the perfect definition of what it means to be a Patriot. Not only was it the statements that she made, but it was the lifestyle that she lived that gives us a true example of what our responsibility to America should be. Therefore, we should admire our elders and the ones who have gone before us, see their lives of Patriotism as an example, and take the desire that they had in their hearts for America, apply it to our daily lives and give back to the ones that gave us our …show more content…
freedom.
First of all, my right as a citizen is to respect the Flag of the United States of America, and the National Anthem.
Both of these things are a symbol of our freedom and we should be proud to proclaim every word of the pledge and anthem. Each phrase that we recite or sing goes so much more in depth than what we realize. Sometimes we say the pledge of allegiance or sing the national anthem and then move on and we do not take time out to think about what we are declaring. Jesse Ventura, a political commentator, author, naval veteran, politician, and governor said, “There is so much more to being a patriot and a citizen than reciting the pledge or raising a flag.” That statement is so true in today’s time because we do these things at almost any formal occasion and it becomes an everyday thing for some people; we forget the real meaning of what we are reciting. Also, the pledge and anthem are a symbol of the wars that were fought which allowed America to become a country. Have you ever been at an event where you sing the national anthem and you look around and see a veteran with tears rolling down his face while he is saluting to the flag ? That is a prime example of a true patriot because the tears show how much this country means to him, not only his country but also the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and Star Spangled Banner. Lastly, we should respect our flag and national anthem because it is a symbol of the principles our country was founded upon. If you break both
of these items into phrases and determine the meaning of each phrase it gives them more value, but it should also give you more dignity, desire, and respect to stand up and proclaim the words of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star Spangled Banner.
Secondly, my duty is to submit to all laws given by authorities. The first reason why I should submit to the laws is because they were established to keep our communities safe. Ever since I was a little girl my parents have always taught me to follow God in all that I do. As I grew older following government laws just became natural to me. Now I realize how important it is to follow them strictly. Every law that has been established has been to protect the citizens of America. The laws range from simple things to horrendous things that will lead you to life in prison or in some states death. People overlook many laws, like talking or texting while driving or not wearing a seatbelt, but both of those are leading causes of death in the U.S. The second reason why I should submit to the laws is because it shows respect to the ones who made them. When people disobey the law, they are just not disobeying something that was written on paper, but they are disrespecting the people who took time out of their lives to make the laws. As I mentioned before, each law was designed to keep each person safe, so the least we can do as citizens is to obey those laws and hold each other accountable for following the laws. Finally, I should submit to laws because it makes our law enforcement officer jobs safer and easier. Each and every day men and women wake up at their home and cannot guarantee to their families that they will return home in the evening. Our officers and first responders put their lives on the line each day to save someone else's life which they don’t even know. That is a true patriot. Bob Dylan, an American songwriter, said, “A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.” As citizens we should have a desire that First Responders have, to be a hero for our country. Submitting to the laws of the government is the first step.
Finally, my responsibility to America is to serve my country. Many people hear the word serve and think it is going to take up too much of their time, or it will consist of much work so they tune it out and go on with their daily life. There are numerous methods that you can serve your country; the easiest place to begin is in your communities. First of all begin with getting to know your area and the people around you. The better you know the community the more ideas and opportunities you will have to serve. Some ways you can reach out in the neighborhood is to pick up trash off the street, help your neighbors with yard work, do simple chores for them, make them a meal or a dessert just to be nice. Doing activities like these not only helps the community out, but it changes the spirit of the atmosphere. Secondly, I can serve by giving back to the men and women that have given up their life to be part of the armed forces. Some people might ask well how can you serve to the ones who have passed on? It’s simple, show respect to the symbols of our country because that is what they lived for, and also help the family members which have lost loved ones due to war. Another way that you can serve these veterans is to go to the Veteran Hospital and fellowship with the men and women that are recovering there. Serving does not always have to do with giving, you can go and spend time with the men and women and make them more happy than if you would have given them a gift. Finally, you can serve the men and women that are active in the army, navy, marines, air force, coast guard, and your local law enforcement by sending them letters or gifts over cease. It can be from a simple letter to a gift or even just a picture, it makes them feel like they are appreciated. Galatians 5:13 says, “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Overall, remember that serving is not something that you do for you, you serve because it is giving glory to God.
In life, we all have everyday obligations that we have to accomplish, but as a citizen of America my responsibility consists of voting, respecting, submitting, and serving my country. Once again, we need to respect the symbols of America and what they stand for. Next, we need to submit to all laws so that our law enforcement can help keep our lives safer. Finally, we need to give back to the people that gave us our freedom. All of these points are a good description of a true patriot, but the one that is most important is serving. Not only should serving be a desire that citizens should have in their heart, but it is a command that God gave his children. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” As a citizen of America everything I do, I will give the glory and honor to Christ.
