The Importance Of Flag Desecration
What does the flag mean to me? To me the flag symbolizes a nation that allows you to be who you want to be, as well as the brave men and women who fought wars to protect the freedom and democracy of our nation. The flag is symbol of The United States of America. I see why a lot of people get upset over the desecration of the flag, it’s insulting to those who served in the military, and as well it’s an insult to those who had family or friends that have served.

The first amendment protects freedom of speech, press, peaceful assembly, religion, and the right to petition the government over grievances. When people burn the flag, it could be considered freedom of speech. However, there are laws that prohibit desecration of the flag. The only time burning the flag is ok, is when the flag is torn up. It is required to burn the flag only when it has ripped. Honestly I don’t know. On one hand you can say the first amendment. On the other hand you have laws that don’t allow desecration of the flag. In my opinion, I don’t think desecration of flag should be considered freedom of speech.

For a while now police have been extremely violent towards black people and sometimes people in general. I have seen news reports and videos of police using excess force. The officers who beat these people claim self-defense. However, the officer can get away with it. Even though they claim self-defense the videos clearly show that it is not the case. I understand that kneeling is way of protesting against police violence. There has to other ways of protesting against police brutality in a peaceful way. Disrespecting the flag is not going to stop the violence in our country. If anything you’re making matters

Many people believe that police brutality in America is a problem. Others have a different thought on the matter. People believe that it is a problem because of what they see in the news and media. They only see one side of the story, not both sides. People only think that colored people get killed by police officers, but that's not the case at all. People always bring race into the killings and say “The white officer shot the man because he was black”. They don't look at both sides of the story. They only see and know what the media shows them. Some protests in the past turned violent and the police had to come in and control the protesters. Just this year someone was so fed up with cops killing black people that during black lives matter…

It is still being debated today whether or not flag burning is protected under the first amendment. The first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (“First Admendment” 2016). In the case of Texas v. Johnson, the Supreme Court decided that flag burning was not protected under the first amendment because the first amendment protects activity such as symbolic speech (Staff 2013). Should there be a new amendment to protect flag burning? In 2006, the Senate rejected the attempt to amend the constitution (Babington 2006).…

Does freedom of speech still protect you today? In 1988, the case Texas v. Johnson, a protester named Gregory Johnson, grabbed an American flag and drenched it in kerosene, then proceeded to light it on fire. Desecrating the flag was illegal in Texas, so he was convicted one year in prison for this. This made Johnson and others argue that what he did was his right, due to freedom of speech, it was a political message, and it was legal to burn the flag in other cities. Johnson was justified in burning the flag because of his freedom of speech.…

Burning the flag of the United States is burning the peoples freedoms because that what the flag represents. It is the symbol of this country and the whole world recognizes the flag and people that live in the country decide to burn the flag. In the article "Burn the Flag or Burn the Constitution" by Fulton Sandra, she states, "Those who would burn the flag destroy the symbol of freedom, but amending the constitution would destroy part of freedom its self." Also, in "Flag Burning Should be Banned" by Brady Patrick and it stated, "They say the flag symbolizes the freedom to burn it: That our flag is the symbol of un-patriotic conduct. That burning the symbol of patriotism is patriotic." What this two articles are saying that is that burning the flag changes the look of the flag of this country, more times the flag is burned it shows the peoples freedoms burning at the same time. Plus, those who burn the flag try to separate freedom from patriotism but the flag already represents both of the statements. The flag of the United States is there to show our freedoms, patriotism, and people and we decide to burn…
