Since the creation of the NFL, there have been significant modifications in the game rules, the type of equipment that players wear, and the sideline assessment to determine severe contact injuries. Despite all these changes, the concussion epidemic is still growing. This paper aimed to look at a bunch of different factor’s effectiveness in decreasing the amount and severity of concussions, thereby decreasing the risk of developing CTE. The first research question proposed was to look how competent helmets are at preventing concussions from occurring and preventing the development of CTE. Results show that helmets are very effective at protecting the skull from fractures but have no way of preventing the brain from moving back and forth inside this cavity.…
Football helmets have always been designed to prevent and stop skull fractures. Now they have the same design and are trying to prevent concussions and professionals don't even fully understand concussions. “The majority of helmets are designed , tested and certified for linear compression only. They don't help/prevent violent twisting during angled impacts. The sharp twisting from angled impacts. The sharp twisting from angled hits increases the potential of…
However, the N.F.L’s head, neck, and spine committee has continuously denied these accusations, even though they have been proven true. the New York Times stated, “The N.F.L. has been found to mismanage concussion research, dating to the league’s first exploration of the crisis when it used deeply flawed data to produce a series of studies” (Branch). This statement acknowledges that the N.F.L previously has mishandled the research on concussions and giving flawed data out to the public to hid the fact that a problem existed. The committee even tried to discredit two reports of C.T.E by Dr. Omalu who found signs of C.T.E in retired football players. They even blamed the players receiving concussions from outside activities. Mr. Miller stated, “A concussion can happen in a variety of different activities” (Schwarz). This statement shows that the committee tries to change the subject of the situation of the players developing C.T.E, and blaming it on other activities so that people will not know how dangerous football came be. One of the main reasons on why the committee previously tried to influence the research is because they want people to continue playing the game. The N.F.L has even gone as far to spend millions of dollars to try…
Throughout the history of football there has been concussions because poor helmets have bad padding. Many people have in it taken a major part in it. How many people have died from head injuries. So people are should upgrade the helmets to protect anymore bad injuries, people have upgraded helmets but we need to do more from causing a lot more concussions. The head and brain are one of the most important parts of the body which they need to be protected and that is a very good way to protect it from injuries…
The National Football League has become the most exciting and thrilling sports league to watch in the last few decades. Most recently players have become much faster and bigger than in the past and the safety of their lives have become a risk. Recently the NFL has been subjected to a large amount of controversy and criticism dealing with how they have handled player safety. This issue has come to the forefront because concussions have become a weekly occurrence. In the last few years it has been studied then proven by doctors that former players have suffered traumatic brain injuries from hits to the head during their NFL careers. As a fan of the NFL, I believe it’s best for the game that the NFL makes some change so…
Concussions cause the dangerous disease CTE that has already claimed the lives of many athletes in the NFL and in other sports. We are doing research on CTE but a lot more needs to be done. If the NFL is going to be safer they need to relinquish all of their information and research on player brain injuries. Some good things are being done to rule changes to make the game safer, but it is still not enough. There is a fine line however between changing rules and changing the game, which the NFL will have to navigate carefully. One of the better answers to these brain injuries is to improve the helmet protecting the head. Many developers have made ingenious new ideas to combat the concussion epidemic in football. It is up to the NFL to adopt the new innovations to the football helmet to drastically improve player safety. A person’s brain is the most important part of the body. It just makes sense to want to protect it as much as possible. As the public becomes more aware of the dangers football has on a player’s brain people may reconsider playing football. If the NFL is going to have a future, they must make their game safer. If people see less players effected by concussions on TV public perception of football will improve. Something clearly needs to be done to combat these serious health problems facing current and past NFL…
A head injury is any sort of injury to your brain, skull, or scalp. This can range from a mild bump or bruise to a traumatic brain injury. Common head injuries include concussions, skull fractures, and scalp wounds. The consequences and treatments vary greatly, depending on what caused your head injury and how severe it is. Head injuries may be either closed or open. A closed head injury is any injury that doesn’t break your skull. An open, or penetrating, head injury is one in which something breaks your skull and enters your brain.…
POW!! CRACK!! I just attempted to deliver a key block on a 240lb linebacker in order for my quarterback to score a touchdown. Our helmets collided. I was dizzy, the lights got brighter, and my head was pounding; I could have sworn I had a concussion. On the sideline a teammate said I’d be fine and that I was going to have the game of a lifetime. I strapped my helmet back up and went back onto the field. I actually did have that game of lifetime, but at what cost? The football helmet is associated with strength and toughness, and so are the men who wear them. The helmet is not there to protect strength and toughness; it is there to protect something much more fragile- the brain. Can the technology of the helmets keep up with each generation of bigger, faster, and harder hitting players and prevent concussions?…
The NFL and other organizations that have instances of concussions are simply not going to go away. While many will outweigh the rewards financially, for playing pro football with the costs of a shorter life, others will consider if concussions should be an acceptable part of the game. In order to continue allowing sports with higher than average amounts of concussions applied ethics needs to be implemented.…
The history of war is what many spend time reading about in textbooks. Few, however, experience war and all that it encompasses. David Leckie, a marine during World War II, uses his book, Helmet for My Pillow, to share with readers the truth of what it was like to be a soldier. Rather than skimming the surface of his time on Parris Island and the Pacific Islands, he goes into unmatched, excruciating detail; every trench dug, every shot fired, and every fallen soldier passed was recounted by Leckie. Setting this story apart from any other, the first-hand accounts of combat, unlikely descriptions of the day-to-day actions of the soldiers, and the heart that Leckie intertwines with each part of his story all combine to make this thought-provoking,…
Thesis: College athletes who are facing an injury during their season should be assisted by a consoler or a sport psychologist for the overall welfare of players (because they are at risk of a psychological breakdown.) A conflicting argument could be that athletes are always receiving special treatment and should be treated the same as any other college student. My main audience that I would be speaking to would be sport organizations, coaches, student athletes, and just students not participating in a sport. Ways to persuade my audience is by giving evidence of my argument and also by using my personal experience. I currently play baseball while attending college and have suffered…
The NFL is trying to make football safe and they are spending a lot of money in making the game safer. Improving player safety is the top priority for the league. According to forbes.com, “it is now illegal for offensive or defensive players to lower the crown of their helmet outside the tackle box” (Forbes). Lowering the crown of the helmet causes head to head contact. Leading with the head can cause severe concussions. Some people think that this rule is taking safety to another level. This rule causes players to not lead with their helmet and to make safer tackles. According to USAtoday.com Reyes said, “Reported concussions in the NFL have declined by 35% over a three-year period, according to the league’s 2015 Health and Safety report released Wednesday” (Reyes). This quote states that concussions have dropped significantly because of the recent rule changes and changes in the type of helmets that are being used. Reyes also explained the NFL’s study on helmets. He said, “More than 500 helmets were tested with repeated impacts designed to replicate average hits sustained on an NFL field. Each helmet was fitted to a crash-test dummy head” (Reyes). The NFL is putting in a lot of money and hours to try to make the game safer for the players. The settlement between the NFL and ex-players is an example of how the NFL is handing the concussion situation correctly. According to NFL.com, “The NFL has reached a tentative $765 million settlement over concussion-related brain injuries among its 18,000 retired players, agreeing to compensate victims, pay for medical exams and underwrite research” (NFL, Ex-players Agree to $765M Settlement in Concussions…
People know what mostly causes the concussions, aggressive, high impactful sports such as football, hockey, basketball, baseball and soccer. Scientists are working to make these sports safe, adding more padded helmets and certain rule restrictions against head to head contact. The rules will add a positive spin to these sports, because every time you break a rule you will get a very expensive fine.” Keith McCants, the fourth pick of the 1990 NFL draft, screened Will Smith’s movie “Concussion” and told The MMQB: ”We were paid to give concussions. If we knew that we were killing people, I would have never put on the jersey”(Retired…
This is relevant to my topic because it shows that even if you might have a great helmet, but it might not be fully protective…
The importance of obtaining concussions at an early age in someone’s life can be the deciding factor of how that individual will perform specific tasks for the rest of his or her life. The investigation will address specific evidence that proves what possible ramifications can come from not placing value on the physical and mental well being of a youth that has obtained a sport concussion. Society needs to be informed of the results in order to create change in how youths play contact sports and come up with a plan of action to eliminate sport concussions in youths all…
