My Strengths And Weaknesses In My Writing Course
Throughout my spring semester, my time in WRC 1023 has challenged me to the highest level that I have reached in my academic years. I have never labeled myself as a strong writer, however now that I have written 3 papers, rhetorical analysis’s, and drafts I can say that I have learned the strengths and weaknesses that I acquire. After these assignments, I am now aware that I am able to back up my arguments and the opposition efficiently, expand my essays more so, and am always willing to ask a peer for assistance to make sure my essays are understandable. However I still remain with the same weaknesses I have had since the beginning of my writing experience. These weaknesses are mechanical errors, jumping into essays, and procrastination. Unfortunately, …show more content…
I have never had to write a paper longer than 6 pages until I came to this class. Paper 2, with a minimum of 6-8 pages tested those abilities. Paper 2 came out to be 7 and a quarter pages with a work cited of 8 sources. With this strength, I am able to create longer papers and elaborate more on my topics. In order for me to reach these page requirements, I was challenged to dig deeper into my topic and pull information out to back up my argument. This is a great strength that I acquire because it helps me to be ready for my upper-level courses when I will be assigned papers 10-15 pages long. An example of elaboration in my papers is paper 2 giving a high requirement of sources that forced me to write more because of the mass about of information I was getting. I was seeing a mass amount of “soft news” articles which is news that is more “into social media and the new scandals” (Media Consolidation Destroying Televised News, 5). Because there were so many of these articles it allowed me to elaborate on my argument. This strength can be related to critical thinking because of how it forces me to think and gather mass amounts of information that can extend my papers to the requirement …show more content…
I have trouble with proofreading and seeing things I should reword or change so I do not hesitate to ask another’s for assistance. I am always, especially during college, determined to never fail assignments; so to prevent that, the day before my essay is due, I will have a friend or family member read over my essay to receive some feedback and see what they think. This method is effective for me because the catch a few mistakes that I was unable to see. In paper 3, I was confused how to in text cite the offender information of those on death row so I asked a friend of mine for assistance who was in my class. Because I utilized one of my peers, I was able to save myself from knocking points off my paper. The correct sentence was “The second case is man named Harlem Harold III who was convicted of running away from a police officer and killing him along with another man who had entered the scene” with the in-text citation (Offender Information)” (The Death Penalty: A Right or Wrong Punishment?, 5). Along with this example, there have been countless times where I have asked for assistance to verify its flow. I believe that this strength helps my grade immensely and overall shows how important it is to me to get a good grade on my essays. This strength will also build up my personal responsibility and make me a better writer if I continue you to

Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

Throughout my time is College Composition I, I learned and developed numerous skills that I will carry with me to college and beyond. While writing the five assigned essays, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. I believe a strength of mine was my ability to add in personal stories into my essays. For example, in my definition essay, I included my fear of disappointment and how I work to overcome this particular fear. On the other hand, one weakness that I struggled with was style. While writing my essays, I would sometimes use wordy and unclear sentences structures. Often times I would focus solely on improving my diction while writing my papers.…

After completing WRD 103 fall quarter I went into the new winter quarter with the former knowledge from the class. After taking WRD 103, I thought I had a good understanding on rhetorical appeals and how to write a well-organized paper. Because of my previous knowledge I had the expectation that WRD 104 would solely focus on how to research a topic and properly cite sources. However, I soon came to realize that the class will broaden my perspectives on academic writing even more.…

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…
