My Strengths As A Future School Counselor Leader
Hello Ashli,

I really enjoyed reading your post relating to your strengths as a future school counselor leader and areas that you feel need development. I feel that we would work well on an advisory board as co-leaders. We have similar leadership qualities that would compliment each other well. Other strengths that you would bring to the co-leader relationship include adaptability and being inspiring. Being adaptable is a quality that I am working on, however, I could bring advocating and communication skills to our leadership team (Dollarhide & Saginak, 2012). These skills combined along with our other strong skills would help to achieve numerous tasks within a school setting. Ways in which we could work together include collaborating on

In the article, The Mandate for School Counselor Leadership, the story about the waterfall resonated with me the most. From my perspective, the waterfall story has real implications and consideration for me as a school counselor. As a new counselor, I desire to save as much children as possible by being their advocate. However, trying to save as much children at one time may not be as effective. “The only way to save the babies is to lead and advocate for systems change” (DeVoss & Andrews, 2006, p.7). Examining the integral thinking model, advocating for a system change is a more effective way to saving more babies than attempting to catch all the falling babies. I love the analogy of catching babies from a waterfall to represent how advocating…

I enjoyed reading your post. Communication and teamwork are keys to group efficiency and I believe G4 worked hard on those keys. A selfless leader will demonstrate integrity because this leader puts the needs of the team members before self; and the leader will stand strong through tribulations and challenges. The three concepts you chose are of great significance for a resilient leader.…

One of the most valuable characteristics that would allow me to serve well as a COM Team Co-Chair is my ability to represent myself as a positive role model. As a youth gymnastics coach for four years, and peer tutor in the University of South Carolina Student Success Center throughout college, I took on a role as a motivator and encourager. I led my students with an enthusiastic and motivating attitude, while demonstrating a professional demeanor, exercising communication skills throughout.…

I have always pursued my goals even after I have met many setbacks in which I have gratefully overcome. The achiever is one of two strengths that I have manifested in my life to reach my goals. Research specifies that people who use the achiever strength work hard to meet their goals and use a stable mindset that helps them overcome hardship situations in their daily life (Strengths-Based Leadership Report, 2012). The second strength is the belief strength, which is when a leader meets challenges and overcomes them by utilizing a belief system that empowers the leader to succeed (Strengths-Based Leadership Report, 2012). Over time these strengths have been an attribute of reinforcement to myself as I accomplish my goals.…

As schools become increasing diverse, cultural competence is essential. Thus, school counselors must have awareness, knowledge, and skills to help the needs of the Asian student population seek higher education. As a minority, I believe that multicultural counseling can greatly impact the lives of students. During my high school years, I felt unaccepted and not understood by my assigned high school counselor because she wasn’t cultural competence. Because my assigned high school counselor couldn’t understand why I chose to apply to only one university, Fresno State, I wasn’t able to go to her when I had questions about college. What she couldn’t understand was that although I wanted to earn an education for myself, I also wanted to stay in Fresno to help financially support my parents. Tatman (2004) states, “Counselors must acknowledge the value that the Hmong place on the family and community and the importance this value plays in all aspects of their lives”.…

My educational career from my freshman year at Saint Louis University High School although with some difficulties has in my opinion been a great success when I look back on it. In my freshman year, I was really challenged academically by my classes but managed to push on with the help of my teachers and friends who knew I could succeed if given some help. My sophomore year was a bit easier now that I had adjusted to the normal homework, I still had a tough time but found a love for my history and English classes, I also found myself becoming more sociable compared to my grade school years. My junior year was likely my hardest year but I believe I learned the most about what I wanted to do in regards to a college degree in my Psychology class.…

At the time, I began my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign it was my aspiration to become an early elementary teacher. However, in the middle of my sophomore year of my undergraduate studies, my ambition of being a schoolteacher changed. After taking and enjoying many psychology courses, I became enthralled by the discipline. I wanted to pursue careers in the fields of psychology and education. My interests in psychology and my passion for working with children in an educational setting are one of the many reasons I took an interest in the career of a school psychologist.…

Let us say that you as a leader wanted to take your followers to a team building exercise – like bowling. You decide that you would reward the bowlers who consistently out produced their counterparts. However, you decide that you would turn all of the lights in the bowling alley off. Now your followers can still find the lanes and even bowl down the alleys. They can hear the balls hitting pins, but they can’t determine whether they have bowled a strike, a split or something in between. The point here is that this is what you are doing if as a leader you refuse to counsel your followers, or if you do counsel them improperly. These are missed opportunities to bring those subordinates into line with the values and goals…

Becoming a counselor would mean the world to me because I love helping others that are in need. In my personal life, I have dealt with people using drugs, stress, body reputation, and mental illness. I have seen others suffer from emotional, physical, and mental abuse from family members, friends, partners, and mates. Throughout my life, friends and family members have always asked me, why I smile or why am I always happy. I tell them because I am stress free and I help others with issues. Some will come to me for advice on relationships and body reputation because they are having a rough time in a relationship or picked on. Personally, I am a willing resource for people to look forward to meeting and discuss information about their concerns…
