Imagine a classroom environment that is chaotic, full of noisy students engaged in "playtime" for the majority of their day. This is my earliest recollection of my kindergarten experience at Public School 5 in Brooklyn, New York. P.S. 5 is located in the Bedford Stuyvestant section of Brooklyn, which at the time, was a neighborhood comprised mostly of African-American families. Community School District 16, where P.S. 5 has always been considered a low performing district and according to the website Schooldigger.com, currently ranks 684 out New York State's 752 school districts.…
The burger restaurant across from the movie theater was bustling with loyal patrons eagerly awaiting their chance to devour scrumptious food. Friday nights were exceedingly difficult for the staff — especially when popular movies debuted. Vanessa tried her best to accommodate the customers in an expeditious and amiable way; however, the high volume prevented her from providing the excellent service she desired to attain quality tips. She told herself multiple times that another job would eliminate much of her stress, but procrastinated when opportunities became available. Besides, with tips, she was pulling in $18 an hour (not bad for a college student).…
The school year had just started; I was walking into the classroom of one of my most difficult classes that junior year. As I enter the room I see a man who looked like a basic high school male teacher. Although he looked like many male teachers I have seen before, I was a little intimidated by the presence he gave off. As I sit down, and class begins, I realize that this average looking teacher is not the intimidating man I thought he was. On this day, I met a teacher who changed the way I look at my academic studies today. This teacher taught me to never give up on my academics and to believe in myself and everything will be okay. This teacher, or so-called average looking teacher, was my college chemistry teacher, Mr. Notsch.…
Working in education has rewarded me in ways that I never expected. I am able to connect with people of all ages and from different walks of life. My life experiences and the strong mentors that guide me reinforce that this is where I am supposed to be. I am walking in my purpose. Being a part of this experience also confirms the suspicions that I sensed but could not prove as a young “brown girl.” Because I was of a different race, the daughter of immigrants, and lived in poverty, I was viewed from a deficit-based perspective. People like me were not “good test-takers” and would simply bring the average down. Unfortunately, not much has changed since then. In most places, students of color are still viewed from a deficit-based perspective.…

My name is Liang Yingyi, a new transfer student who major in nursing from Guangzhou, China. In order to be a successful educator, it is important to reflect upon one’s teaching. The problem addressed in the story is actual nowadays. It is children’s misbehaviour, their unwillingness to study. It examines the growth of the relationship between student and teacher through personal understanding of each other, which is the inspirational foundation of their education. The story reflects the author's preoccupation with the moral…
My education began in first grade in 1974. My state didn’t mandate kindergarten, so my parents didn’t send me, even though my brothers and sister went. It wasn’t easy for me, because school was the first place I ever got to interact with other people, mainly children, as an equal.…
