There I was riding the longest wheelie possible last year. In front of my house with my Mom and Dad watching me I was feeling like a pro, And then it happened. I was riding the longest wheelie I ever attempted in my 3 year of biking. I rode it from my garage down my driveway then turned out in to the street to the stop sign it was like 2 football fields in length. And all the sudden I lost my balance, the front end of the bike came up way to far and I went to step off and I fell to ground like I lost my balance. Then I went to get up and I got to my feet but then I fell right back down to the ground. I had no clue to why I fell. My mom and dad came walking over to me saying im fine just get up so I try to get up again and I fell now they are taking me serious now they put me in the car to go to the hospital. When we arrive at the hospital, The people at the door put me into a wheel chair to get me to a room. They went out of the room and brought me back tons of ice to get the swelling to go down before they can take x-rays but once they took my x-rays and they said they’ll have the results in 5-10 minutes and they wheeled me back to my room . It all started with my interests in orthopedics. This year, I decided to take Sports Medicine in school. After covering several football games, the athletic trainer John let me tend to the wounds and had me question the athletes about their injuries. One night, a Miramonte student athlete injured his leg severely while playing a football game against Alhambra. He was a sixteen-year-old football player whose leg initially seemed twisted compared to the other leg. Later, the knee swelled up. I helped him to the sidelines and began the routine tests, starting from his history of injuries to the specific motion tests. After having observed the swelling, I felt my way around the knee and moved it relative to the rest of my body. With the ways he felt pains, I explained to the athlete that the ligament was probably torn, and he needed to see a doctor quickly. But, since I was a trainer and not a doctor, I was not certified to provide a diagnosis. I could only advise the athlete the basic rest, ice, compression and elevation before seeing an orthopedic doctor later that night. The next day, the young man returned with a cast on his leg to thank me again and told me that the doctor verified the torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)…

One of my friends asked me if I was okay and i said "yeah I am fine". But then he asked me if I was okay after the hit? I said "yeah it hurt a little bit I'm okay now". Not thinking to much about the hit I started walking down the sideline to some of my other buddy's and then all of a sudden I felt super light headed so I sat down on the ground and soon enough another trainer came over and said if I was alright which I wasn't. The trainer checked me out for a little bit and asked me multiple questions which I thought I answered correctly but before you know it there was a ambulance and a fire truck sitting in the parking lot. With the paramedics rushing over to get me they soon put me on a stretcher and took me to the ambulance. I'm not gunna lie I was really scared one being I didn't know why I was being put into a ambulance, and because my parents were not down at the games to see if I was okay or where I was…

Although I have had many injuries growing up, there is one that particularly changed my life for the better. The injury occurred when I was playing eighth grade football. It was August and we were scrimmaging Westfield; a very good team that had a lot of big players. The coach called me onto the field to play fullback, which means that I was probably going to carry the football. As I was running onto the field my heart started to beat a little faster. I had a bad feeling about getting the ball. I thought that I was going to get hurt because on the play prior the fullback ahead of me injured his knee on a run. Everything went well for the first few plays, but on the fifth play the coach called a fullback run. My heart was racing, at the snap of the ball I ran ahead for about an eight yard gain, but on the way down I felt a horrible pain in my right foot. I ended up going to the hospital a half an hour later, the doctor said that I had multiple fractures (6 to be exact), possibly some torn ligaments, and a dislocation of a few bones. I really did a number on myself. The doctor claimed to me that I would be out for at least 6 weeks, which is over halfway through the regular season. The doctor also highly recommended that I go see a sports injury specialist, or a foot specialist.…

I was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a disease that makes my bones very brittle. When I was in kindergarten, I had broken my Femur. I was running across the playground playing with my friends. All I hear next is SNAP! and I was on the ground, leg throbbing in pain. I immediately knew my leg was broken. Once they got me to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, I was being brought in for x-rays. My surgeon, Dr. Rathjen had…

My sophomore year while playing in a football game, I tackled a player from the other team right before half-time. While I was making the tackle, I felt a pop in my knee. It wasn’t very painful because of the adrenaline in my system at the time but the next day the pain came. It felt like there was a rubber band getting caught on my knee and coming off almost every step I took. I just put this pain aside through part of basketball season until the pain was too much and I went to get a check up, then a MRI, then before i knew it I had to get surgery for a torn meniscus. This ended my basketball season. After surgery I went to my rehab physical therapist Dr. Marty in Centralia. He got my knee back in good working order after…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…

I was at practice one Wednesday night of January the 11th, in the middle of a defensive drill In which I planted my foot and put all my weight on it ready to turn the ball handler. Then made a quick few steps then dropped to the hardwood I was in a world of hurt. I quickly grabbed at my leg grimacing with pain as my head laid back. I tried to hold back tears, after receiving help to sit down I could feel the cooling of ice on my leg, however, I wasn't able to pinpoint the exact part the pain was coming from. My dad had to come and pick me up and I could not put any weight whatsoever on my leg for literally three days. My mom took me to get an x-ray the next day, the doctor said: “Well the x-rays don't show anything let’s wait a while and if you still have any complications then we’ll schedule an MRI.” About a week and a half went by until I finally got the MRI it took about an hour and the machine kept giving off these strange loud noises it was weird. Then we had to wait for a few days to get the results, It was that Saturday at six o'clock that me and my brother and sister were at my grandma’s then my mom called asking to speak to me I picked up the phone not expecting what I was about to hear, “Cameron, the results came back and you have a completely torn ACL, you need to come home and get back on the crutches.” It felt like I just got shot, I was not expecting a torn…

Mary (changed name) was admitted with right cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and was now just waiting for residential placement. One of the side effects left over from her stroke was that she had a drop-foot for which she had a splint and a walking stick; she had declined to use a frame. Mary was one of the patients on my team so I was getting to know her quite well during my first two weeks on the ward. I was working with another patient when I saw Mary twist on her ankle and try to steady herself on her stick. This had the effect of spinning her round and she fell to the floor onto her left hip. I ran to help, she was in a lot of pain and slight shock, I called down the ward for help several members of staff came to help saying "do this" and "do that" all at the same time, I was quite over whelmed. Mary was rolled back and forth onto a sling, hoisted up and placed on her bed, all the while I was looking after her head, I did not know what else to do so I talked to her to calm her down, which was difficult due to all the commotion. On initial examination the senior nurse on duty said it looked like she had broken her femur, which was later confirmed. Her residential placement was cancelled and she was transferred to stepping hill.…

I was wearing a leg brace for several month. I was on crutches because I couldn’t walk on that foot. I needed help doing many things I didn’t need help doing before my surgery. I needed help going up the stairs. The surgery was planned a while ago but it was a hard surgery and I knew that I would need a good amount of time to recover. I decided to do it during the summer so that it wouldn’t interfere with school. When I got the surgery, my foot slowly healed as school rolled around but wasn’t completely healed and I was still told to try to stay off my foot as much as possible although my brace was off. Since my leg hadn’t fully healed, I couldn’t join the swim team freshman year.…

Elisabeth Stuart Phelps captures the essence of time when “ young ladies had not begun to have ‘opinions’ upon the doctrine of evolution, and before feminine friendships and estrangements were founded on the distinctions between protoplasm and bioplasm” (Phelps 8). She writes a kunstlerroman novel of young woman who has the ability to go far with her artistic talent and looses her inspiration after being married. Another author who tackles similar issues is Louisa May Alcott and her novel “Little Women”. Alcott conveys different perceptions for women and conventions what they must adhere to. Conventions in this retrospect deals with ideology that at a certain age young women give up their what is determined, a ‘childhood passion’ to assume the role of a wife. Both Phelps’s novel “ The Story of Avis” and Alcott’s “ Little Women” brings forth the idea that women through marriage were being suppressed and abused by the social constraints that has been set for them. Also, the role of mother, wife and then a person conflicts with any aspirations for being financially independent and/ or a woman seeking a creative lifestyle. A more contemporary type thinking might question this by asking why cant women have the best of worlds, a family and a career? However, Phelps and Alcott works speaks for them by giving us a realistic and creative outlook on domestic life for women who want both.…
