I V Nutrition: The Myers Cocktail
The absorption of nutrients normally occurs when we ingest food or beverages. After all, our body needs nourishment to stay healthy. Nevertheless, there are people who find it difficult to take in nutrients, due to illnesses and the like. Thankfully, through IV nutrition, they can receive proper amounts of nourishment.
IV nutrition is the process of getting nutrition into the body through the veins. It was developed in the 1960s and was first used to treat beagle puppies. Today, IV nutrition has taken advanced steps to treat all sorts of illnesses and diseases, which include:
• Crohn’s disease
• Short bowel syndrome
• Gastroschisis
• High-output fistula
What’s more, a lot of clinics use IV nutrition to improve certain aspects and areas of the body. They create different cocktails that target specific mental, physical, and emotional problems. This include:

Mentioned above, nutrients from food travels throughout the body through the blood and these nutrients are sourced from the digestive system as the nutrients are produced by the breakdown of food. The absorption of food occurs in the small intestines and inside the small intestines there are thin finger like tubes called villi. Digested food enters the small intestines and each villus allows absorption of the nutrients into the blood stream. There are three main ways the nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream and these are; passive diffusion, active transport and phagocytosis. Passive diffusion is diffusion of substances across a membrane and the nutrients pass through capillaries and capillary walls meaning they pass through the membrane within the capillary wall. Active transport is when molecules use energy to move from a low concentrated area to a high concentrated area. Inside the small intestines, there is a low concentration of blood therefore the nutrients moves from the low concentration area through the cell membrane to the high concentration of blood in the capillaries and into the blood stream. Phagocytosis is when living cells called phagocytes engulf harmful or infectious cells and get rid of them. The phagocytes engulf the bad chemicals from digested food and get rid of them through waste products. The link between the circulatory and digestive system is through the transfer of nutrients through different types of…

The best way to protect this to make sure patients are completely informed and that the medical professionals are able to uphold their promise; to take care of and do what is in the best interest of their patient. In many cases taking the most precautions and using the best medical care is what is in the best interest for their patients, but that is only if this is what a patient wants. As long as a patient is mentally competent, it is no one’s place to tell them what they can or cannot do to their bodies. To say intravenous hydration and artificial nutrients are not on the same morality scale as other (more invasive and life altering) medical interventions is wrong. All of these medical interventions are just that, interventions. Any of the interventions previously stated could not be spontaneously replicated by nature and they just as life sustaining as other treatments. From a professional definition, they are different procedures, but from a moral standpoint, they are all the same. This is why I truly believe that if a patient refuses medical interventions, this would morally include artificial hydration and…

In October 26th, 2012 it was announced that Lil Wayne was hospitalized for dehydration and migraine, after spending several hours being treated with IV fluids, the singer was released. The initial goal of this medical procedure is to restore intravascular volume. The simplest approach is to replace dehydration losses with 0.9% saline. This ensures that the administered fluid remains in the extracellular compartment, where it will support blood pressure and peripheral perfusion (Alok Kalia par. 1). The article, “The History of Saline Solution in Modern Medicine,” reports, "Saline use first appeared during the 1831 Blue cholera epidemic in Europe. Experimentation was first attempted to treat those suffering from severe dehydration” (par. 2). Based on the early use of saline solution, beginning in the XIV century in Europe, it is evident that this therapy has been shown to be effected for many years and continues to be useful in today’s modern practices. Intravenous (IV) therapy involves the administration of a therapeutic solution directly into a vein (“Intravenous Therapy” par. 1). The term intravenous therapy begins with the understanding of each word, intravenous simply means "within a vein", and therapy is known as a treatment intended to relieve symptoms; therefore, intravenous therapy may be used to deliver medication directly into the bloodstream. The article, “Intravenous Therapy; IV Statistics,” states, “Of all hospitalized patients, 85% have some type of IV therapy” (par. 1). When one speaks statistically of intravenous therapy, it shows that is commonly used in more than half of the patients that are admitted into any hospital, showing the importance of this therapy in patient’s life. In intravenous therapy, installation of a large amount of fluid and/or electrolytes, or nutrient substances into a vein is implemented, and if in not performed correctly, complications may appear.…
