The focus of this research was to do a comparative analysis between nurses and physicians in regards to their personal views on the of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) in their daily workflow (Ayatollahi, Roozbehi, & Haghani, 2015)
2. Identify the section of your article where the literature review was discussed. Is there a section title? If so, indicate that. If no section title, indicate the location of the literature review in your article as specifically as you can. (2 points)
The literature review was discussed under the “Research Instrument” subtitle which was located under the “Methods” section in this research.
3. What is the research design and method? (3 points) …show more content…
Based on the information provided in this research study, Ayatollahi et al., (2015) state that this research was conducted via the use of a “case study” method.
Having this information, leads me to believe that the research design used in this here was the Evaluation Research. This is further reinforced by reading the section contained within the Health Informatics Research Methods: Principles and Practices textbook section: Evaluation research is the systematic examination of the effectiveness of an object. Examples of evaluated objects include policies, programs, technologies, products, processes, events, conditions, or organizations” (Layman & Watzlaf, 2009).
4. What was the instrument used to collect the data? (3 points)
The data collected for this research was performed by utilizing a “five-point Likert-scale questionnaire ranging from strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (5) was used to collect data” (Ayatollahi et al., 2015)
5. What was the sample & response rate? (2
points)
The sample for this research study consisted of 28 physicians (16 specialist & 12 general practitioners) and 145 nurses. Out of the total sample of 173 participants, the response rate was 65.9 % (Ayatollahi et al., 2015).
6. What analytical techniques were used? (2 points)
This research used the following analytical technique: SPSS version 18.0. Based on the data analysis section “To analyze data, mean values and standard deviations were calculated, and physicians’ and nurses’ opinions were compared using t-tests” (Ayatollahi et al., 2015).
7. What were the key findings, limitations, and recommendations in this study? (6 points)
The key findings in this research is that both, physicians and nurses had similar thoughts in regards to the positive impact that CPOEs have with the improvement of patient safety and quality of care. However, among the key findings, it was also pointed out that there were some differences in opinions regarding “the impact of CPOE on interorganizational workflow and the working relationship between physicians and nurses” (Ayatollahi et al., 2015). According to the research, nurses were more inclined in agreeing that CPOE has an impact on interorganizational workflow and the working relationship between both professions.
The limitations were that this case study was that the CPOE was only used in one teaching hospital rather than in several. Another limitation is that the CPOE system developers focused on implementing this same system in other hospitals. A third limitation is that only specific people were used in this research study. According to Ayatollahi et al., (2015) perhaps incorporating participation of other participants i.e. “pharmacists, radiologists, and laboratory technicians” might provide different results rather than focusing on such as small sample size. Lastly, the fact that this research was conducted via a single case study, this results derived from this case study are only for the nurses and physicians in a single hospital setting rather than a more general hospital setting.
Ayatollahi et al., (2015) recommends that this study further research with a bigger sample size should be conducted. Additionally, it should include other participants to be part of this research in order to get more accurate results
8. How does this article provide value to HIM or HI? (4 points)
This article provides a lot of value to HIM and/or HI professionals in the sense that it helps them understand how nurses and physicians feel in regards to the use of computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems and the interorganizational, communication and quality aspects that are associated with the CPOE systems. It gives HIM and HI professionals an opportunity to learn more about what the staff’s work environment needs and concerns are. Even though this researched was based on a very small fraction of nurses and practitioners located throughout the country, it gives HIM and HI professionals an understanding as to how other CPOE system users feel. Additionally, this research provides value to HIM and HI professionals in the sense that this data, can also help give insight as to what type of specific information should be included in business proposals when purchasing a CPOE system from a vendor. As we learned from this article, CPOE systems can vary drastically from one entity to the next.
