The United States bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a way to retaliate against Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
The U.S.was the first country to use nuclear weapons against an enemy.
The morning of December 7, 1941, Japan fired on eight U.S. Navy battleships and sunk four of them. They also damaged and destroyed three cruisers three destroyers,as well as destroying an anti-aircraft training ship and one minelayer.
The attack killed over two thousand Americans and injured over a thousand more.
The U.S. declared war against Japan, thus beginning World War II. …show more content…
The U. S. dropped two nuclear bombs on separate cities in Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The first bomb was dropped over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. This wiped out approximately 90% of the population in Hiroshima. After the nuclear explosion, 40,000 more people died from the radiation from the bomb.
The second bombing was over the city of Nagasaki. August 9th only three days after the first bomb.
After the nuclear bombings, Japan’s Emperor Hirohito announced his country’s surrender, ending World War II.
The surrender was announced in a radio address on August 15th.
The U.S.
Army spent millions of dollars modifying the American B-29 bomber, so it could carry the nuclear bombs that would ultimately be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
American company Boeing, reengineered a plane that was capable of traveling and carrying weapons for the war, including the atomic bomb..
The first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima was named “Little Boy”.
The second nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki was named “Fat Boy”
Immediate effects from the nuclear bomb included: cancer - especially leukemia and lymphoma. The radiation effects caused mental retardation, having a lower IQ, blindness, spinal bifida, and also cleft palates. The rates of women with breast cancer increased, while men experienced a thyroid problems, hair loss, and diarrhea.
There are two different types of radiation
Thermal burns, a pattern corresponding to the dark portion of kimono that people were wearing at the time.
The second type of radiation was keloids, a severe scarring caused by thermal radiation.
Another effect of the nuclear explosion was the “black rain”. The mixing of large amounts of airborne irradiated materials combined with thermal currents from the firestorms led to rainfall in both cities within 40 minutes of the bombings. As the particles were mixed with carbon residue from citywide fires, the result was with the black rain coming down onto the people and their
surroundings.
The black rain was a sticky, dark, and dangerous radioactive water.
It stained skin, clothing, and turned the buildings black.
The black rain was ingested it by breathing and was consumed in contaminated water and food.
The nuclear bombs dropped on Japan were similar in their destruction, but were constructed with different elements.
The “Little Boy” was made with 141 pounds of Uranium, using most of the processed uranium in existence at that time.
The huge nuclear explosion was caused by 0.7g of Uranium.
