I am a volunteer chemistry tutor at the Chemistry Aid Centre, tutoring first year chemistry from 2016-2017 and I deeply enjoyed the experience of teaching students who are struggling with course material but were willing to take the initiative to seek help. This experience helped was very rewarding as it allowed me to mentor other students in both chemistry and general work habitats. I would like to continue being engaged with the Chemistry Aid Centre for this reason.
Working as a tutor, I was able to see what things were good about the Chemistry Aid Centre and what things could have been improved to benefit the students and made things easier for the tutors themselves. For example, I found it was common for students to come ask for help on lab material. It would have been more efficient for the tutors to have been provided an online schedule of which weeks were preforming which labs so tutors could read up on the procedure ahead of time rather than have to spend time going over the procedure with the student. I feel it's unfortunate students are often deterred away from the subject since it can be overwhelming and I can personally identify with that feeling. However, I learned that once you begin to look at chemistry with a positive attitude, it does become very enjoyable and I want to help other students realize that too. I believe the first step in this process is changing student mentality on how they should study chemistry and for us provide resources for students to better understand how concepts fit together rather than memorise them separately, which I feel is what students tend to resort to when studying. This starting step is often the hardest but I want to be apart of CSU to help provide the support students need for this first
