Do you remember that feeling when you got your first car or truck? How that vehicle gave you that sense of freedom and pride? Well mine sure did. I got my truck when I turned sixteen. Not only was “The Black Betty” my pride and joy, it was a part of me. After spending all of my savings, a long list of parts and a majority of my time. I finally had what I considered my “dream truck.” That truck was my pride and joy at the time. I’ve always been around anything and everything with a motor. Whether it had two wheels or four, I was interested in it. I believe that is what got me to customize my first truck. For a guy to spend all of his money on something, it has to be really important to him. I had bought the truck for just over six thousand dollars and had about four thousand left to do what I wanted to it. Come to find out, that did not last long. In the end I spent well over eighteen thousand dollars in two years on that truck. I drained my checking and savings account on that beast. The parts list for “Black Betty” seemed never ending. Six months after I bought it, I had to replace the clutch and rebuild the whole transmission. After that, the starter and power steering pump went out within three days of each other. I was beginning to think that I had gotten in too deep. The most expensive fix, that was actually needed, was the ECM. The engine control module cost me a small fortune of nine hundred and seventy five dollars. I think I put most of my money into the bells and whistles then the necessities. The truck didn’t need programmer or new rims and tires but it sure did make it run and look better. Whenever I got an excuse to go and drive my truck I took it. I spent most of my free time working on this truck until it was finished. All of my other time was spent working to pay for it. I remember staying down at our family’s body shop till the early hours of the morning trying to

I find my position on this subject to be sympathetic. I imbue personality into personal possessions, especially the cars and trucks I have owned, and after a time, I view them as more than just a mode of transportation. This video was targeted at sympathetic consumers. The automobile holds a special place in the hearts of Americas, it represents our freedom, and is often an outward expression of how we view ourselves.…

Henry Ford, an American inspiration, engineering prodigy, and business magnate, is the founder of Ford Motor Company, and guarantor of the development of mass production. Despite popular belief, Ford did not invent the automobile or assembly line, but established the first automobile that many middle-class Americans could rationalize purchasing. Transforming the luxe transportation into a practical conveyance, Ford profoundly impacted the economic landscape of the 1920s. Born in 1863 into a farm family in Dearborn, Michigan, Ford says, “It was life on the farm that drove me into devising ways and means to better transportation” (22). At an early age, Ford held an interest in mechanics, constantly thinking of new ways to improve an object’s…

Today, Fords are all over the road, big and small, gas and deisel, of every generations from the past 5 or so generations. Not only that, but they come in a very wide variety to fit the customer’s needs and/or wants. Thanks to just a spark of creativity and “outside of the box” thinking, Henry Ford made all this possible since 1903 and for the years to…

While my previous car was not a terrible car, I had lacked a sense of ownership in it due to it being handed to me. Purchasing my very own car that I decided on, it gave me pride in what I was driving. I invested thousands into it fine-tuning and modifying it in any way that I desired. I learned many useful insights about automobiles, as well as having fun in the process. As the rules were for my first car, I had to come up with the money for the gas and insurance as well. Working harder and more frequently, I was able to afford and maintain the financial responsibilities required to have my…

My resurrection of the old boat motor started in the waning days of summer. School was starting up and I was looking for some productive way to spend my time after school. I had always known that various old boat motors were down there but I assumed all were weak and would only propel a boat at a dismal pace. This time however, something caught my eye! It was an eighteen horsepower 1957 Evinrude fastwin. I never knew an engine this powerful was in our basement! Like frankenstein's monster I was going to breath life back into this old engine!…

Living in West Virginia, one has ridden in a pick-up truck at least once. If it was in the front seat or the back, especially when you’re six foot three with your knees in your chest. Or when everyone hopped in the bed, you knew it was going to be a good time. Growing up my father had two trucks that I can remember, both of them I loved to ride in. The first one was the definition of a work truck, and it broke down everywhere. The other one was a very nice family truck that he loved, and so did I considering it was the first vehicle I ever drove. I currently drive a truck as my daily driver, and considering my history, I want to test if there is a better truck out there than mine. So I will be testing: suspension, carrying, handling, and gas…

This summer, I spent my weeks, day in and day out, working on an old pickup. The pickup was a 1991, with over four hundred thousand miles, and enough stories to bring a child from adolescence to the age of retirement. The vehicle had been used in illegal drag races, drunken ride homes from the bar, and chasing women of promiscuity and easy virtue. The vehicle had been used for smuggling over the border and fancying authentic…

In my years of Junior High I discovered the thrill of business. My father had a small ATV with a snowplow and I asked him if I could use it to clear the neighbors' driveway. His response was "show me a business plan, and we'll talk." I had no idea how to write a business plan! When I asked my dad how I was to do it, his response was classic "You'll figure it out." This response has become a second guiding motto in my life. I did figure it out, the business plan was approved, and the business grew. At its peak, it had 3 vehicles in the fleet and expanded its service to cover anything from custom Christmas lights to yard renovations, all at the age…

When it was time for me to get my license, I did not have a car. I had practiced driving my sister’s car because it was much smaller than my mom’s SUV or my dad’s truck. It was a silver, four-door 2000 Toyota Camry. I drove that Toyota when I took my test to get my driver’s license. I was very nervous because most of my family and friends did not think I would pass the test. I passed my test the first time. I had…

Finally, after riding for what seemed like an hour, we arrived at the tractor store. I felt as if I were in heaven. There were blue tractors, red tractors, tractors of all shapes and sizes, and much more. I checked out every single one until my eyes came across something I just had to have. I had spotted a little orange toy tractor that came with a trailer. I was set on getting it. I ran up to my grandpa in hopes of his approval to purchase it. Thankfully, he agreed.…

I bought my first car when I was sixteen years old, knowing nothing but the basic tune-up skills. I bought a 1982 Datsun 280ZX for $1200.00 and couldn't be happier with my purchase. The vehicle had only 100,000 miles on it, even though it was almost thirty years old. The car ran well already but I did my best to get it running as close to new as possible. I purchased new spark plugs, a new air filter, and also bought a couple new electrical components to replace the old ones. I didn't quite know what I was doing until I took a wrench to it and just went for it. I soon learned that my instinctive ability to repair a vehicle, would in time, prove rewarding. I also learned that buying an older car isn't as bad as people think. Older cars possess the ability to provide long lasting dependability, regardless of their age, and also can be a lot easier to work on. All of these aspects benefited me when buying older cars, saving me sums of money in the long run.…

These Chevy and GMC trucks were designated a C for two-wheel drive and K for four-wheel drive. They offered truck owners a truck that road like a car thanks to the ladder frame with a drop-center. They are still immensely popular among truck enthusiasts and hotrodders, and if you are restoring one of these trucks, be sure and put in new floor mats for that extra showroom touch. H&H Classic carries replacement parts for your truck.…
