After almost 4 years of work experience ranging in many different fields, I have adapted new skills and abilities, as well as the value of money. With challenges being faced, the forced me to manage my time, money, and effort in an organized way. This changed my direction, and motives, in life as well as my whole perspective on what is important and what really matters.
My parents had given me the old family car, but insisted I pay for the gasoline and insurance. After a long search for a job as an unexperienced worker, I landed my first job at Round Table. While the job was a mundane activity of holding a sign and making house calls, I learned the difficult way the value of money. Realizing the hours of work I would have to endure, I rethought my purchases from that point on. While my previous car was not a terrible car, I had lacked a sense of ownership in it due to it being handed to me. Purchasing my very own car that I decided on, it gave me pride in what I was driving. I invested thousands into it fine-tuning and modifying it in any way that I desired. I learned many useful insights about automobiles, as well as having fun in the process. As the rules were for my first car, I had to come up with the money for the gas and insurance as well. Working harder and more frequently, I was able to afford and maintain the financial responsibilities required to have my

The narrative, The Driver’s Seat struck home for me because I just received my driver’s license this past May, 2015. I took time for me to actually drive and to become comfortable behind the wheel of a car. This piece of writing spoke to me and allowed me to review some of the identical thinking points that I went through while getting to the point of taking control of my dad’s car. The story effectively walked me through the trials of spirit and mental anguish that preceded me in taking hold of the vehicle with my dad as the co-pilot giving directions. This was the exact thing the driving instructor in The Driver’s Seat‘ taught the author. The routine of how to maneuver and throw caution to the wind- taking risks- to get the author over…

I was sitting in my grandfather’s dark house, sitting in front of my father’s big stereo with his huge gray Sony headphones listening to his Boys II Men cd. I feel a tap on my shoulder; I turn around and it’s my father. He said, “Come outside, dad’s going to teach you how to change the oil in the truck.” The first thing that came to my mind was why in the world would I want to learn how to change oil in a car. I am only 11 and I don’t have a car. My mom would always say “ Felicia before you were born your father wanted you to be a boy so he didn’t want to know the sex of the baby. He wanted to be surprised because he just knew you were going to be a boy.” I figured hey I guess this was the closest he would get so I always went a long with it. On top of that I was a tomboy so I guess it made it easier for him to ask me to come learn about something…

Drive is something that tons of people have not yet to grasp. The word drive itself is just as powerful as its definition. Having a drive for something means there’s passion in what you’re doing. My drive is to get out of bed every day and be productive. It’s my drive that pushes me to get to work and push myself forward. Having that drive for something isn’t something I would want to let go of either. The problem today is that it’s that it’s hard to have a drive for something since it may take a while to achieve that goal. Sometimes I want to give up just thinking it’s not worth it in the long run, but an underlying drive kicks in that keeps me going.…

My whole life I have been a leader, the rule maker, the boss, a take charge and a "get stuff done" type of person. These qualities I attribute to being the oldest sibling, raised by a strong mother, and a stepfather determined to raise another man’s child as best he could. I thrive in situations where I can have control and can help guide a team or myself to the best possible outcome. I apply these characteristics to nearly every aspect of my life, sometimes to a fault. After dropping out of college eight years previously, to follow my dreams of being a makeup artist, I woke up one day and decided my life need a change. Not completing school had always weighed on me over the years like an unfinished task needing to be done. So, why now, what changed? My outlook on life shifted after meeting a special little boy named Jackson.…

The Degree in which I changed my life We all know that change is scary, and for some of us, almost impossible. The fear of the unknown is at times all together overwhelming. However, change happens everyday, even if we don't recognize it, change is happening around us, all the time. I chose to welcome change into my life, I had to, or I was going to lose the most important people in my life, my children. Approximately two years ago, my world came crashing down on me like a wall of bricks. In one day I had lost my fiance', my children, my job, my home and my car. My ex-husband had made false alligations and by the time it was all said and done, all I had left was the family dog. That dog became my best friend that day! It would have been easy for me to fall into a deep depression and give up, but it just wasn't in me to do that!…

Throughout our lives there are many obstacles we have to face, some may shape us and some may scar us years onward. My story is a common one that countless people have faced that got in the form of disguise that isn’t always pretty. Approximately ten years ago when I was a regular third grader, when life seemed to be rosy and full of fairytales, that nothing can be worse than not having your favorite meal at lunch, I had a theatre performance that changed my life.…

“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…

I think back to Thanksgiving Break two years ago. I was volunteering at Metropolitan Ministries with a volunteer group that I was a part of. The coordinator was giving out jobs to the various groups that were there and my group was assigned to help people unload groceries into their cars. He pulled us over to the side and said, “Please don’t judge these people on the cars that they are driving because a lot of them are going to be nicer than yours and your parents. These people thought they could afford these cars but a lot of them lost everything and that car is the only thing they own now.” I just didn’t quite understand why someone would put themselves into a financial situation like that. Then I started to think about how our society makes people feel that if they drive a car with the name Mercedes on the back that they are better than everyone else. I used to ask my mom why we didn’t have a Mercedes or a BMW. I mean it only seemed right, she made enough money. She told me that “ Why would I spend an extra twenty-thousand dollars just because it has a nice name on it” she said, “I have a top of the line Honda Accord and for the price I got my Honda I would get a mediocre Mercedes.” These people, they buy these expensive cars to impress people that probably don’t even care about them.…

Everyday I go to school and see that people are always bragging on how they have all this new stuff and I’m just like ‘yeah cool whatever’ because I really don’t care but it bothers me that my family can waste their money on cigarettes and crap like that but they can’t get their kids new school supplies or book bags or clothes or shoes or even give them a couple extra dollars so they can get what they want or need. I find that growing up without anything is gonna make my life in the future just look back and say “ Look at the obstacles I’ve overcome to become better “ . I know it’s so cliche to say ‘oh I have financial issues’ well in my case my financial issues are costing me my future to go somewhere in life and not be like my parents. Financial issues are where you can’t pay the bills on time and lose your electric and water for 2 weeks, it’s where you can’t get new things because your parents can smoke up to 12 packs of cigarettes a week , and finally to where you have to be the adult and save your home because your parents are too childish to talk to the landlord. Financial issues made me grow up and learn if you want something done you got to find a way to do it…

As a child, I grew up in a family that lived “paycheck to paycheck”. My wardrobe consisted of hand-me-downs from other families whose children with whom I went to school. More often than not, I went without things that were not a bare necessity. When I “grew up”, I decided my children would not live that way. Although my girls seemed never to mind, the older they got, the more I started to realize that they were growing-up under similar circumstances. Money was tight, so to speak, and their father and I were doing our best. Looking back, I am now determined to prioritize my finances to ensure that no matter what difficult times my daughters face, with my help if needed, their children will break the cycle we have been accustomed to for so long. I will have the beautiful home in the safe neighborhood; the season passes to all their extracurricular activities and the “soccer grandma-mobile”; not to mention the financial capabilities to spoil them rotten. I hope to be the financially stable mother and grandmother I have always dreamt of becoming.…

My mother had always told me that I should “Do what makes me happy. Not what pays the most. Money isn’t happiness.” Growing up, my family always struggled with money. The lack of money, never really phased me as much as it would other kids my age. My mother always found ways to entertain me as a child and still to this day, my mother and I can still have a memorable time without money. She's the kind of person who has thoughtful discussions, the kind of mother who always has time for her four children, and the kind of woman who taught me to fight in what I believe in. Growing up with such a strong role model, I developed many of her enthusiasms. I not only came to love the excitement of learning simply for the sake of knowing something new, but I also came to understand the idea of giving back to the community in exchange for a new sense of life, love, and spirit. Everything that my mother has ever done has been overshadowed by the thought behind it. In her endless love of everything and everyone she is touched by, I have seen a hope and life that is truly…
