Personal Narrative: My Life Changing Experiences
“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself. For instance, when I was younger, I had failed to properly learn how to ride my bike at around the same age as the other kids. I had difficulty understanding the phrase “It is as easy as riding a bike”. Particularly, I had a difficult time balancing and moving forward on the bike. I was so fixated on what I was doing wrong, I did not realize what I was doing right and what I could do to improve on what I had done right. Learning how to ride a bike was one of the most painful, life-changing, experiences I had ever gone through. I was ten years old, still on training wheels. I was still wearing: knee pads, helmet; elbow pads; and gloves. At first, my dad had …show more content…
I was determined to show my dad that I could do it. That I could beat my older brother in something. That I could be one of the cool kids. I spent countless days trying to learn how to ride a bike. Then one day I decided it was enough. Training wheels are going to need to come off and I am going to need to learn how to balance myself one day. I went into our garage and I had taken out an open ended wrench and I began to unbolt the training wheels that I felt had been restraining me from my full potential of bike riding. I have had enough of the “safe” route of learning how to ride a bike. I had ditched the helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and the

Nearing the end of the tube I can almost see the shore, It feels as if I've been riding this wave for days. This wave is my hurdle in the ocean that is life, choppy at the beginning but slowly passing by. The ocean has many waves, one for each surfer to ride, my specialty wave happened to be dyslexia. It was in the second grade that my teacher first realized I was different from the other students, because I had yet to read my first book. My parents had found this odd as well, and took me to see a neurologist, who diagnosed me as having dyslexia. I did not quite know what this meant at the time, I only knew that it was the reason I could not comprehend the topics as easily as my classmates.…

My whole life I have been a leader, the rule maker, the boss, a take charge and a "get stuff done" type of person. These qualities I attribute to being the oldest sibling, raised by a strong mother, and a stepfather determined to raise another man’s child as best he could. I thrive in situations where I can have control and can help guide a team or myself to the best possible outcome. I apply these characteristics to nearly every aspect of my life, sometimes to a fault. After dropping out of college eight years previously, to follow my dreams of being a makeup artist, I woke up one day and decided my life need a change. Not completing school had always weighed on me over the years like an unfinished task needing to be done. So, why now, what changed? My outlook on life shifted after meeting a special little boy named Jackson.…

The Degree in which I changed my life We all know that change is scary, and for some of us, almost impossible. The fear of the unknown is at times all together overwhelming. However, change happens everyday, even if we don't recognize it, change is happening around us, all the time. I chose to welcome change into my life, I had to, or I was going to lose the most important people in my life, my children. Approximately two years ago, my world came crashing down on me like a wall of bricks. In one day I had lost my fiance', my children, my job, my home and my car. My ex-husband had made false alligations and by the time it was all said and done, all I had left was the family dog. That dog became my best friend that day! It would have been easy for me to fall into a deep depression and give up, but it just wasn't in me to do that!…

The first time in my life that I ever experienced true anger and fear was in the sixth grade. A little before Thanksgiving Break, I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer, in my lower back. I had a mole there that was removed earlier that year, and the test results on it had come back positive. I did not find out until later, but when my mom sat me down across from her to talk, I knew something was wrong. It was then that she told me what was going on, and I broke down in tears. I had never experienced fear such as I did then.…

According to Buddha, “The only real failure in life is not to be true to the best one knows." Failing is hard especially when you haven't experienced its full effect. Ever since kindergarten, I was an honor roll student. I received all the certificates and recognition, I got to eat lunch with the teacher, which then was a goal for most kids my age. Entering middle school, I was confident that I'd be just as successful. First quarter grades were passed out and knocked me right out of the clouds of glory. Sixth grade advanced math was the one class I dreaded, and in that class I received my very first 'F.' I lost a huge piece of my confidence because I couldn’t memorize simple steps like everyone else could, no matter how hard I tried.…

“Never give up”. This has been my mantra since ninth grade. Whether it was in school, sports, dance or just life in general. During elementary and middle school as well as in the beginning of high school, academics was a serious struggle for me. School was a constant uphill battle. I always had this feeling that I wasn't good enough or smart enough. In classes I got anxiety that teachers would call on me, and I would incorrectly answer the question. I felt I would embarrass myself if I got the question wrong. This, in turn led to self doubt. I would compare myself to other students who often complained if they got a 85 on a test. I always felt satisfied if I got a 85 because that grade of 85 was like a hundred to me. I was often ashamed of…

Learning something new can be a very scary experience. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was to learn how to drive a tractor-trailer. Truck driving has been in my family for generations. Since I was a young child I always knew I wanted to be able to drive tractor-trailers. I spent a large portion of my childhood around big trucks and have always found driving such a large vehicle to be exciting. I decided that learning how to drive tractor-trailers was a valuable skill to learn and also to maybe carry on the family legacy of truck driver. The biggest reason I wanted to learn however, was simply because I thought it was fun and I enjoyed it. I never wanted it to be a full-time job, but it could be a skill that I could always have to fall back on. What I never realized is just how hard it was going to be to learn to drive and how much more there was to learn other than just driving. I remember watching my father and my uncle’s drive and they made it look so easy. I thought it would be like driving a car, but I was certainly wrong about that, I had no idea what I was about to get myself into. I was about to turn 18 years old and not only getting ready to graduate high school but also getting ready to learn how to drive tractor-trailers.…

My greatest achievement in life is undoubtedly my greatest failures in life. To "learn from your own mistakes" is a quote by which I have lived all my life and will continue to live by. All my life, I, like all other humans, have made mistakes. However, unlike others, I have squeezed through these huge walls of mistakes and have come out as a reformed individual, with a positive outlook on life. They say that experience is the best teacher; and what better way to get experience than from your own mistakes. May it be in terms of academics, self-reform, or even in helping others, I have made mistakes; but have never let them overpower my confidence and perseverance to succeed in life.…
