Upon receiving my letter for invitation to apply for the National Junior Honor Society came feelings of hard work pays off, and a bit of pride. I have worked very hard to maintain an all A average at Friendswood Junior High while taking some PAP classes as well as challenging myself with Latin. Having been told in a conference with a 5th grade teacher that I was not going to be an A student and that my parents and I needed to get used to that fact, sent me on a mission to be the best student I knew that I was capable of being, regardless of what any teacher thought.…
When I think of FIU Honors, I think of home: a place of nurturing, acceptance, and inspiration. An environment of unparalleled success, where students are challenged daily to excel academically and personally. Due to its prestige as one of the nation’s leading business schools, FIU lies at the top of my list along with its Honors College. As an accounting major, I’m attracted to FIU Honors because it is educating tomorrow’s socially responsible leaders. I seek to join the Honors College due to its challenging curriculum, passionate instructors, cohort setting, and multicultural study abroad programs.…
The components of citizenship, community service, academics, work and home life, and extracurricular actives help me shine as a well-rounded individual. As an involved and caring citizen in the Union Township community, I do my best to make my mark. Displaying a good role as a citizen through community service has been a value I possessed ever since I could remember. At a young age, I started to serve my community with my parents at both school and church events and it has stuck with me since. Through community service such as being an assistant teacher in St. Veronica’s Religious Education Program, Glen Este High School’s member of National Honors Society, and Key Club, I not only helped out Union Township but I have also made new relationships and feel good about myself. Community service always makes me feel better because I know I’m helping others and making my mark through the friends I have made through both of these service programs.…
Honors Study Hall is a highly debated topic within Wild Rose High School. People talk about where it should be held, who should be in it, and even if we should have it in the first place. This year our school decided to take honors study hall from the cafeteria and place it in the library. This was a bad idea because instead of changing the location, the subject in which should change is the people who are allowed to be in honors study hall.…
In the first DQ, I stated in my original answer, I will not have concerns but I will have questions. Being new to the education field, I am naturally going to questions on planning, evaluation, IEPs, and/or meeting the needs of the student ID. However, I will rely on my the education I have received from my journey at GCU. I will rely on my current experiences with working with adults with intellectual disabilities on planning, evaluation, ICPs (the adult version of an IEP), and/or meeting their needs. I will rely on the many resources available for special education teachers such as The National Association Special Education Teachers, Council for Exceptional Children, Wrights Law, Center for Parent Information and Resources, and many more.…
I completed my community service for the Autism Speaks U 5K run/3K walk, which was located at Kendrick Park in downtown Amherst. The mission of this organization is to spread awareness and fund research for autism, and there are 4 pillars which are research, awareness, advocate, and family services. This organization serves children with autism who live anywhere in the nation and are the younger demographic, but can be any race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and group identity. I am different from the people served because I do not have autism, but I understand that it is a disorder that is not very well understood, so it is monumental to try to change that by finding causes and treatments for autism to help families of children suffering…
I am deeply honored with the opportunity to become a member of National Honors Society. As a student with a 4.3 grade point average, this has always been something I have looked forward to. My grades are my top priority. Classmates in school admire me and call me “smart”, I, in the other hand, do not think of myself as smart. To be more precise, I think of myself as a student that has taken the opportunities given and has used them wisely. I have gave every class my best, and have tried to do all things to the best of my ability. I feel that I am a hard worker. I am a one hundred percent dedicated to anything I am a part of.…
Being blessed with good health and opportunity, I take pride in myself for being able to use my talents to help others that are not as fortunate. I realize I have only taken small footsteps in my overall life service learning. However, I know that in the future those small steps will turn into strides of progress in from serving my community. The feelings that I have felt throughout this service learning course have allowed me to envision my future very clearly. I know that the connections I have made this semester will encourage me to continue on completing my ultimate goal: to make the world a better…
For a girl who is use to achieving at everything she does, it was a great astonishment when I heard I didn’t make it into National Honors Society. I have never felt such like a failure before. When I first started high school as a freshman I have heard of National Honors Society because my brother was in it so I wanted to be in it as well. At my high school you can only be invited into it as a junior. To be invited into it you must have had a 3.5 GPA or higher.…
Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…
Following the incident, I began to immerse myself with opportunities of service and involvement. In addition to helping myself, I wanted to be a reason for another’s joy. Every week I spent time with my school’s Special Education program in hosting events and activities to make them inclusive. Within our first year, I was able to help begin a Special Olympics for my peers to participate in. However, I was also determined to impact the community outside of my school. For a project that I led press relations with, our Key Club’s Louisiana Strong Campaign was able to acquire more than 1,225 items within a month for victims of the Louisiana flooding. My years in service have brought me to understanding the content I receive when being able to bring fulfillment to others. As well, both of these projects represented that although I am only an individual, it only takes one person to be a catalyst of relief for many.…
Through the completion of my graduate program, I have gained an immense amount of knowledge and a plethora of skills which I have used and will continue to use after my graduation.…
My final project consisted of making a digital history on my family’s journey in coming to America from Dominican Republic. The technology that I used to create my project was an iPhone, iMovie, and Youtube. The process I undertook had many challenges. I decided to make a movie, which meant I had to go home for a weekend to video my grandparents and father. I also had to gather documents and pictures to support my movie, which was very difficult due to my grandparents not having many photos from the 1970’s. My father, on the hand, had many pictures of his childhood, so I made him the focus of my movie. In addition, I had to research what was occurring in Dominican Republic during the 1970’s to explain why my grandparents wanted to leave. After I collected all the information, I spent days putting the movie together on iMovie. Unfortunately, iMovie failed me many times, which made my project time consuming. One of my recordings of my father talking about his experience deleted by accident and I could not go home again to record him. Corresponding, I had to record my…
For my service learning project I worked in Mrs. Evelyn Costa's first grade class at Meadowlane Elementary. Meadowlane is located at 4280 W 8th Avenue in Hialeah, Florida and was constructed in 1957. There are one thousand one hundred and seventy seven students enrolled at Meadowlane Elementary school. Meadowlane has fifty three classrooms and fourteen portables and there are one hundred and seventy nine students per grade level. The school was built on nine acres of land. The student population of meadowlane Elementary is comprised of 97% Hispanic, 2% White, and 1% Asian.…
