The small amount of monitoring that the United States does is nothing compared to what many other countries have done and continue to do. For example, in ancient India and China people were paid to spy on fellow citizens and report back to the emperor or king. Now, instead of paying people it is more cost effective to just have security systems, such as traffic cameras. There are cameras all over the United States and this bothers a lot of people, but if you think of these cameras as alarm and security systems on your house, you will be more inclined to accept them. You are often seen on your home security cameras, but so are people who are trying to break into your house. These cameras make your house a safer place, and the NSA does the same for the United States. Traffic cameras are all over the United States; there are roughly 30 million in the United States. According to data collected by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, 22 states have laws that allow or even require all kinds of traffic and surveillance cameras, and other States have laws prohibiting at least one kind of surveillance. However, for most of these states there are exceptions to the laws that allow the use of a specific kind of surveillance like traffic cameras. It isn't much of a difference if it is the entire world or the United States Government looking for criminal activity. In the end only The United States Government is going to take action and save people's lives. I'm not saying that the government should be able to spy on everyone whenever they want, because that would be a violation of their civil rights. It is important for there to be lines and rules the government has to follow so they don't abuse their power. For example, needing a warrant to look into specific people's personal information, tap their phones, or look at their credit card history. There are many programs for cameras that can detect suspicious behavior and alert authorities or someone who is monitoring the cameras. This completely takes racial profiling out of the equation.
