The University of Michigan Health System expansive website shows that the negative effects of television do not stop at education. The website reports that children who watch TV are liable to have elevated cholesterol, problems sleeping, weight issues, and are more likely to…
Television is just another part of technology keeping us from viewing the world and living our lives as we should. Instead of coming out of our house and taking on any challenge the world might have for us, we easily give up to our laziness, which quickly makes us grab the bag of chips, the soda, and sit down. Even though I am one of the many people who just loves to have the remote by their side, I strongly believe that television is nothing but detrimental to our society.…
Lastly children that are exposed too much TV can show risky behaviors not appropriate for children. You may think a show is not bad but something simple as a child seeing someone smoking can provoke thoughts in the child’s head. Some TV shows and cartoons also promote racial stereotypes. All this can affect the child when they go out in the real world and how they treat others.…
Television is not the basic programs that were aired even a decade ago. There are now programs called reality television. Maryann Haggerty quoted, “In the blink of an eye, it seems, reality television has become a certifiable global pop-culture phenomenon.” There are currently over 200 reality television shows broadcasting all over the world. Any given subject can be found on television. You can watch a program from cooking, to life of a teen mother. With all the hours spent on watching such shows, I feel television has corrupted the world. Television is causing people to become, overweight; teens are using television as role models, and the world is using television for instant gratification.…
I agree that television shows influences our behaviors even without our knowledge of it. Although television seems like a great thing to have, it has many drawbacks. Television can have negative impacts on people, especially kids. People learn new skills by observing, then utilizing it, such as when we were kids and learn to walk by seeing our family walking around or learning a new subject in school. Therefore, when watching television it may influence our fundamental social dispositions; no matter if it is good or bad. Almost ninety nice percent of households possess one television. Television is today’s source of news, stories, legends, and characters from previous centuries; the reason why it is so influential. However, only “0.7 percent is used for public service announcements and news”(Sex, violence, profanity...). The other 97.3 % consists of television shows with violence, crime, advertisements and mainstream blandness. Many studies and research has been done to demonstrate that heavy television viewing may lead to serious health consequences. Television is great for entertainment but has grown into a major problem.…
At-risk categories are kids and elderly people. The average American kid spends more time watching TV than attending school. Kids eat while watching TV, and they may do the same while doing homework. Elderly people watch TV even more than kids, since this is their main entertainment at home. TV is inherent in our lives. It is natural for a person to enter an apartment, switch on the light, then switch on the TV, and then keep on doing other things. The problem is not with watching - the problem is with watching what: breeding violence and aggression through horror films or being stupefied by silly talk shows of many kinds. TV is becoming one of our main leisure activities, a source of ready-made stereotypes and new myths, a passive view of the world thrust on us from the angle of the camera that may distort the reality out of recognition. We like TV and hate it because we are addicted to it.…
TV corrupts our children. Jerome Singer once said, “If you came and saw a strange man teaching your kids to punch each other, or trying to sell them all kind of products, you’d kick him right out of the house, but here you are; you come in and the TV is on, and you don’t think twice about it.” He is correct; entertainment television is an especially bad influence on children for many reasons, including not enough control on violence. These things are quite literally ruining America by corrupting our next generation’s leaders, our children.…
In my opinion one of the biggest impacts that television has had on American culture is childhood obesity. Obesity is considered a form of malnutrition in which food energy is stored as fat due to being unused. Child obesity is bred within the home and the television is a major contributor to it. The energy we consume from food needs to be used up by the body on a daily basis through physical exertion. An overweight child devoting a major portion of time to watching television is at risk to becoming obese. Television is certainly a contributor to that obesity. Kids these days are getting bigger and bigger, while television shows are growing and growing. To me, that is a big issue and television affects it a lot. Back in the day children enjoyed going outside to play, getting involved in sports or just anything outdoors. I feel like as of today there are now only about a quarter of the kids that enjoy doing outdoors stuff like that. The other 75% of kids choose to stay inside because most likely there favorite TV show is on or there is a movie that they just have to watch. Those kids are losing their…

In the argumentative essay “T.V. Addiction” by Marie Winn, Winn relates watching television to having an addiction with drugs and alcohol. The television experience allows us to escape from the real world and enter into a pleasurable and peaceful mental state. When it comes to television, Marie asks the following question: Is there a kind of television viewing that falls into the more serious category of destruction addiction? To my perspective, I think there is. If you think about it, why do so many people watch so many hours of television and instead of doing what they’re supposed to be doing, they put everything else on hold and just focus on television? I think this is because they want and or need an escape from their problems or just need to clear their minds.…
(Violence in television programs and movies and its impact on children and families is not a new topic. Almost 30 years ago the U.S. Surgeon General warned Americans about the negative effect of television have on the emotions and behaviours of children.)…
Joe is sitting in school watching the clock. The teacher is talking to the class but Joe just can't wait to get home. When the bell finally rings, he runs out of the classroom all the way home. After getting home, he runs to turn on the TV. Having nothing more exciting to do, Joe will sit in front of the television keeping him from doing his homework until his mom calls him for dinner. This is an all to familiar in many American homes today. What many people don't realize are the problems that can develop from young children watching too much TV. Many arising problems are resulting from this concern. When a young child with a maturing brain sits in front of the TV for several hours every day, it can instigate loss of creativity, impatience, and violence further along down the road.…
