While living in the USA during my gap year, I audited community college classes to explore different subjects. I especially enjoyed Abnormal Psychology because most of our homework assignments consisted of writing research papers, for example on autism. Through this experience I gained invaluable skills, such as critical thinking, data analysis, persistence, problem solving, time management and organization skills. While reviewing literature, I realized that causes of many brain and mental disorders are still unknown. This made me aware how crucial research is in order to discover causes and treatment methods. Nevertheless, I chose to take time off after school to learn more about myself and what I want to achieve in life. During the two years, I worked as an au pair in the USA. I stayed with a host family and took care of their daughter in exchange for room and board. I had the opportunity to connect with people from all over the world, learn about their cultures and improve my English. Moreover, I developed decision making and communication skills and I learned how to adapt to new situations.
