One of the key factors was the dedication towards academics that the school emphasized. The students here are more focused on grades and improving the community than alcohol or partying. While my mission does include fun, I value getting the most out of my education first. Furthermore, most classes are taught by professors who love their field, rather than just PA’s who are working toward their PhD. Additionally, medical school is incredibly expensive and the name of the undergraduate school is less important than the name for medical school or residency, therefore it made more sense to save for undergraduate education, thus UT Dallas appealed to me for their honors program and scholarship money. However, even though UTD is not as well-known as UT Austin or Rice University, for my major, it actually provides a better education than those other schools. UT Dallas is unique for its brain and behavioral sciences department, unlike other schools where neuroscience is only offered as a concentration or a minor. The research buildings are not only beautiful, but also state-of-the-art, and because of the smaller scale of UTD, I have already been able to gain the opportunity to work in Dr. Theodore Price’s laboratory dealing with pain plasticity.
