Newton's Laws Of Motion Lab Report
The purpose of this lab was to learn about Newton’s laws of motion by completing an experiment, to see how the forces act on objects. The independent variable of this experiment is the type and amount of materials used for the interior of the vehicle (out of the material list) and how they were used. The dependent variable is how and if the interior of the vehicle protected the egg from getting cracked. The controlled variables of this experiment were the height that the vehicle was dropped from, the maximum number and type of materials that were allowed to be used, and the surface the vehicle was dropped onto (a hard surface such as concrete). When I dropped the vehicle with the egg inside from eight feet, the vehicle accelerated towards the ground. Then when it hit the ground, the ground pushed back up …show more content…
I placed the egg, holded by the cotton swabs, in one of the cups and then slid the other cup on top of it. Before I closed it all the way, I spread all 10 cotton balls and both tissues around the seam area to help keep the egg and cotton swabs from moving. Then I taped it closed. I learned about Newton’s laws of motion, by observing how they acted on the vehicle in this lab. Specifically in this lab, I dropped the vehicle and observed how gravity made the vehicle accelerate towards the ground. Then I watched how the vehicle rapidly decellarated as the vehicle landed and the ground pushed back up on the vehicle, causing the vehicle to bounce before coming to a stop. I learned how inertia made it so that if I had dropped the egg in the cups without any interior protection, the egg would have kept moving towards the ground until it hit the bottom of the cup, and cracking. But with the interior protection in the vehicle, the movement of the egg was stoppped very shortly after the movement of the cup stopped, because the objects inside of the cup were pushing back on the egg and keeping it mostly in the same

    During the building process we were strapped for materials, until we made a much needed trip to the store. At the house we tried to use a plastic ball and water to secure the egg before wrapping it in the bubble wrap. After failure we tried other materials but they never made the testing stage dues to elimination. We went to ace hardware to look for materials that would hold the egg securely without breaking it. After searching for a while and scratching out ideas we found a two inch PVC pipe along with two one and a half inch test plugs that are water tight. At this point we still had the water idea to hold the egg inside the tubing. To keep the wieght down we used cotton balls inside the tubing to keep the egg from coming in direct contact with the hard plastic, but instead with the soft cotton. With this idea secured we took ot to the testing stage.     Isaac Newton was born on Christmas day in 1642, in Lincolnshire, England. Newton attended Trinity College in 1661 and had both his Bachelor of Arts and his Master of Arts by 1669. That same year he became the associate of the French Academy of Sciences. He was elected to Parilment, then appointed a warden, and finally, President of the Royal Society. Newton was a master of science and mathematics. He discovered calculus, before Leibniz' became popular. Perhaps Newton's most popular discovery, though, was gravity. As the story goes, Sir Isaac Newton was resting under a tree one day in his garden, when an apple fell from it and hit him on the head. Thus, he discovered gravity. The earth's gravitational pull pulls objects toward it. However, many people believe that this is only a myth created to simply illustrate Newton's discovery. <br><br>Along with Newton's many discoveries, the three laws of motion are famous. These include inertia, acceleration, and the idea that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Inertia is the idea that a body in motion will remain in motion, and a body at rest will remain at rest. For example, if I were to throw a baseball into the air, it would keep going until grasvity pulled it back down to earth. However, if I left it sitting on a table, it would lie there until some kind of force were to move it. If I were to push a skateboard across the floor with all of my might, the skateboard would accelerate more than if I gave it a light shove, simply because there was more force behind it. More force = more acceleration. If I were sitting on a swing and someone were to grab hold of the swing, pull it backwards, and release, I would move forward in the opposite direction.
