Complete chaos is not defined by the insane morality shared by many antagonists in novels, pure chaos is revealed in the lack of consciousness of an antagonist who feels no remorse for their misdeeds. Chigurh in Cormac McCarthy’s No Country for Old Men is an example of this agent of chaos. Chigurh is an atheist character who has one goal in the novel and seemingly no morals to stop him from achieving this goal. As a character in the novel, Chigurh is viewed as the main antagonist who serves as an agent of fate and chaos whose only goal seems to be that of killing and retrieving the money.
