No Tipping Policy Essay
I recently ate at a Japanese steakhouse; I used of one the 3 functions of money for that dinner. I use the function of money being a medium of exchange, where I exchanged my legal tender (U.S dollars) for food from the Japanese restaurant. At the end of the dinner the waiter brought the check, I analyzed the check and calculated the tip I should give the waitress for her service. I mean the general rule for tipping is 15%; I usually tip more than that only if the service is great and the waitress was attentive and friendly. Tipping is just the usual thing you do at a restaurant, but lately few restaurants have change to having no-tipping policies. Not long ago more restaurants have implemented new policies involving tipping. Why are they implementing these policies? It’s a response to the recent commotion of people wanting to increase the minimum wage. According to the New York Times the report “that as several cities begin to implement minimum wage increases, "an expanding number of restaurateurs are experimenting with no-tipping policies as a way to manage rising labor costs."(Eater.com). First, a few local restaurants tried out the no-tipping policies raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. This movement was inspired by Danny Meyer a New York City restaurateur and the Chief Executive Officer of the Union Square Hospitality Group. Meyer started the no-tipping policies in his restaurants in …show more content…
Many say that tipping is hurting the hospitality industry ex. Danny Myer the man who help start the no-tipping movement. I can see the positive in this; no tipping will allow workers in the restaurant to each be paid equally without having to relying on commission from the customers. I never been to Europe where no tipping exist so, I can’t say if I prefer it or not, but after reading about it I believe it will cause a positive impact, depending on how much the menu prices go

They have to rely on the customer in order to make a pay check. This may make the customer fell like their being scammed out of their money, because the person serving them isn’t working for them so why should they have to pay the persons wages. Another con is the tip your giving may be as much as the stuff you bought or possibly even more. Some places coffee is just a dollar and with a dollar tip that would set the price as the same as what the person bought. Another problem is that they may have a cup set out in order to make the customer feel bad about not tipping. What if you don’t have enough for a tip at the time? You feel you have to because it’s set right there in front of you playing a mental game. OR what if they give you bad service why should you tip for…

This week I chose an article that displays an act of kindness. Thirty-two year old Kasey Simmons from Dallas, Texas was shopping at a local grocery store. While he was shopping, he noticed an older women crying. He tried to cheer her up, and insisted to pay her small bill. Simmons later told the news station that it wasn't about the money, but rather about doing an act of kindness for someone in need. Kasey Simmons later went to work at a local Applebee's restaurant. After a few hours into shift, he received a very big tip of 500 dollars on a 37 cent bill. The note on the tip was from the old women's daughter from the grocery store. She stated that her mother was upset…

My main motivation for taking this course is from my Bridging Disciplines Certificate in Social Inequality, Health and Policy. I became involved in this program because of a growing interest in health disparities and health care system differences. As a pre-med biology major, I had not had a lot of exposure to the non-scientific side of medicine and health in general. However, after traveling to Peru for a month to do medical volunteer work and taking a sociology course that discussed social determinants of health, I came to realize that there is a connection between health and social circumstances that is impossible to ignore. This led me to an interest in the factors that create a person’s social circumstances, which…

In order for any change to happen people must first have to start by replacing any political officials that are not supporting the views of its people and the greater good. We have to make sure that people in office that are representing us and advocating the increasing on minimum wage, are fully supported. Politicians like Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have the right idea when it comes to minimum wage. They want to impose laws so that states and federal government are required to increase the minimum wage whenever the cost of living rises (Johnston 1). There has to be an uprise by women, young workers and other low income individuals by having a peaceful protest to the government that the current minimum wage is not acceptable. Creating a petition and have it sent to a government official that advocates the increase of minimum wage can also aid the cause. A petition will have the same results as a protest but with this method it will allow expansion of the idea to different states and different people allowing more coverage and even more individuals to accept the idea of increasing…

    Restaurant Racism

I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for three years and have come across some assumptions when it comes to race and overall service. From the most part, servers get paid primarily in tips, so depending on the server and the generosity of the guests, that is how a server makes his money. I work in a very diverse area where people of all races come into my restaurant and although it is wrong, I have to admit that I am, among others, an example of implementing racism. The minute a family enters restaurant racism has been initiated and they have become labeled by the servers on duty. From my experience, people of Caucasian decent tend to be easy going and leave a better tip than all other races. When I see an African American couple get sat in my section I automatically assume they are going to be impolite and needy and not leave the suggested 18% tip. Although I know that assumption is wrong to do, this is just solely based on my experience. To prove this assumption I went around to the neighboring restaurants and asked some of the servers how they feel about taking care of African American guests, and they all agreed with my statement of them being poor tippers and…
