When people hear the word “hero”, they may think about someone that flies in a cape and saves people. However, everyone in society has the potential to be a hero,and impact the lives of others on a daily basis. Mulan, Odysseus, and my parents are all examples of heroes who process distinguished courage, and who admired for their brave deeds.Their heroic actions can be further defined by the definition strategies of function,example,and negation. In history, more men have been recognized as heroes than women. Is it because men are more determined and stronger than women? A woman who has proven that this is wrong is Mulan. Mulan is worthy of the title “hero” because she was an selfless, courageous and unselfish warrior.Mulan’s function was to bring honor to her family. This is demonstrated when joined the army in place of her father . If her identity had been exposed, it would have resulted in the death penalty, yet she mounted her steed and went into battle, risking her life many times. Another example is when Mulan used up the last rocket to create an avalanche in order to defeat the Huns. She was selfless because she risked her life to save the life of others.Mulan is a hero not only because she was courageous or selfless; she was unselfish too. After returning in triumph from war, the emperor offered her a promotion to the top ranks.Mulan refused such an enviable future and simply asked to be returned home. If Mulan had refused her call to action and her family the emperor of China will also have been killed by the Huns.This is why Mulan deserves the title “hero”. She changed society’s views on women, held off invading armies, and risked her own life to join the army for her father’s safety.
