Number The Stars Chapter 1 Summary

The title of this book is, Number the Stars. This book was set during the timeline of WWII and is based on a little girl named Annamarie Johansen. In chapter one, Annamarie was racing her best friend, Ellen Rosen, leaving Annamarie’s little sister, Kirsti, behind. Two soldiers on the corner of Osterbrogade noticed the two girls running. He stopped the two girls and started to question them when Kirsti finally caught up. A soldier noticed her and started to go on about how Kirsti reminded him of someone he knew while playing with her hair. Kirsti sassily pushed his hand away. Annamarie then started to think about her king. He was a kind king who would greet everyone. We then find out that Annamarie had an older sister as she starts to think about her deceased sister, Lise. Annamarie would never talk about her sister to her parents, and knew that they couldn’t. In chapter three, the season changed and fall came along. Annamarie and her mother were making the bed when Annamarie then started to think about a memory she had just come to her mind. She told her mother the memory, hesitating after realizing that she could have just reminded her mother about her sister Lise. But instead of a pained look, her mother smiled and quietly giggled. Annamarie’s mother then realized that Kirsti had a broken button on her jacket. Her mother then told Annamarie to go to Mrs. Hirsch’s thread and button shop after school. After school, when the girls had got to their destination, they realized that Mrs. Hirsch’s shop was closed. They assumed two or three different reasons for why Mrs. Hirsch wasn’t at her shop.
