“Culture of Care” is something the healthcare are striving to accomplish. According to NorthWell health, faculties are setting goals that by year 2019, 90 percentile of healthcare workers will be delivering quality care to every patient. This includes showing empathy and support to the patients and improving communication. However, I believe the healthcare system still has many barriers to overcome to be fully emerged in this goal. For instances, it is evident that many individuals do not adjust to change well or may feel to overworked and they do not have enough time. Overcoming these obstacles are essential to improving patient care. In the presentation, the parents were anger and scared because they were lacking information about their son, whom was in the hospital. They were also hurting because they want the best for the son and feel helpless. The parents are trying to protect their son the best they know how to, which can result in lashing at a worker because they do not know what else to do. On the other hand, having Aunt Elaine quit her job to come and help the family is heroic. She also helped Mr. Engle to talk through his writing not only to communicate, but to test his cognitive skills. This really stuck out to me because not only was he able to write out how he was feeling, she was figuring out the depth and magnitude of his injuries. Mr. Engle did not mention how Aunt Elaine helped his parents, but I believe by having her there with them helped inform and calm the parents down.
6. My reaction of the story “Barb” was heartwarming and inspirational. She treated Mr. Engle as a son and made him feel comfortable and safe when he was in the hospital by speaking kindly about her coworkers and the faculty. She also included all the awards the hospital has received. Barb showed empathy and dedication by going out of her way to make Mr. Engle feel at ease in his stay, even though he was not always nice to her. Barb really made a difference in Mr. Engle’s life, and I aspire to become a nurse just like
