A leader is willing to work with employees when short handed. Yoder-Wise (2015) described leader as build the culture of teamwork, set a direction, develop a vision and communicate that direction to the staff. Also, Thierry Sheridan, Watzlaf, & Fox (2016) agree that it is important for "the leaders to stay in regular contact with superiors, colleagues, and staff." They need to use active listening and communication skills with all positions. Communication is an important skill that leaders must use to encourage and develop other nurses and to bring about innovative changes to nursing practice. Besides the investigation between two nurses about shift exchange, I must find the holistic approach of the individual nurse. According to transformational style, a leader must be concerned about the individual needs of each nurse and to do this by working one-on-one in a private manner. It is important to understand their situation, needs, and also to figure out whether nurse had sound reason the shift change. I would communicate with the nurse in a calm manner to find out what was the struggle, in the nurse who could not come to work on her time of care. In addition, I would investigate the other nurse to ask why she could not switch the shift. Also, I think it is important to understand the whole picture, not just one side. Since this is fair treatment, the two nurses, they will be happy and willing work to help promote safety and patient care. Kerfoot (2015), agreed with this approach when he stated, “Happiness starts with an infrastructure that supports the employees to do the work they are inspired to do.” I believe transformational leaders need to be knowledgeable about diseases process and patient care. It is important for leaders to educate or and demonstrate proper techniques in order to share this information with other staff. Kerfoot also stated, “efficient staffing is a foundational factor in creating happiness.” Addressing my employee personal needs
