Unit 1
Introduction
For the purpose of the assignment “Principles and theories of management and leadership” I will also be focusing this assignment around my clinical role and work place. I am currently employed as a clinical deputy manager in a 37 bedded nursing home, my role consists on both management and leadership, the majority of the time is spent managing the home, however when we are short staffed as a registered nurse I will step in and become the shift leader.
For this assignment, I have used four main headings which are;
Management and leadership, theories and principles.
Leadership styles.
Motivation and empowerment.
Management of performance.
I will start by discussing principle and theories of management and leadership; this first section will cover the concepts and nature of management and its functions, giving definitions of leadership, and how they influence management, discuss the effective and ineffective, on team behaviour and business performance.
The assignment will then move onto leadership styles, this section will analyse the characteristics of different leadership styles, discuss the suitability of the different leadership styles for different purposes and situations, what factors affect the suitability of the different management styles and the ethical dimensions of these styles.
In the motivation and empowerment I will analyse the relationship between job satisfaction, commitment, motivation, empowerment and business performance and the implications that some of them have on organisation structure and culture, analyse the implications for employee relations policy and strategy that empowers a workforce, analysing the principles underpinning a reward strategy.
Finely in the last section management and performance I will be looking at different approaches to performance management and appraisal, looking at the factors involved in managing a work-life balance and the implications they
