Obesity In Public Schools
Today, obesity rates are the highest they have ever been for teenagers. This is not due to genetics, not due to disease, and not because of too much junk food. Students are facing many health and life problems because of a simple mistake that schools are making. Today, in order to balance physical education and academics, schools require a minimum of two years of physical education. This is half of the four total years. The rest of the years it is optional. This may cause students to be physically inactive for about two years straight. This inactivity is causing a quick rise in obesity rates. Something should be done about the obesity rates, and schools aren't helping. Since the health, career, and mindset of many children are at risk, schools should require students to take some form of physical activity, whether through a sport or P.E. for all four years of high school. This lack of concentration on physical education can be harmful. For example, obesity rates are rising quickly among children. According to CDC, 19% of …show more content…
to be mandatory because they don’t want to “waste” space on their schedule because they want to take as many academic classes as possible. However, too many AP classes, and too much time sitting and studying, can cause too much stress which damages their health. For example, according to Collegeboard, 33.4% of students took an AP class in the year 2013. Symptoms of stress include headaches and fatigue and many thinking problems. On the contrary, exercise can help reduce stress, and is good for the brain so students don’t have to face that stress, no matter how much work they have. Furthermore, no class or free period is more important than a person’s health. Would you rather have another A, or would you rather do something that benefits your entire future. Taking P.E. will allow you to be happy in the future as well. Taking at least one period for exercise is mandatory, for the future, and to maintain

One out of three American kids are obese. This rate has nearly tripled in the past thirty years. According to the Medical Dictionary, obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, twenty percent or more over an individual’s ideal body weight for their age and height. As we know obesity can lead to horrible things such as illness, disability, and death. To put a stop to obesity we need to start educating kids at a younger age, considering their rate is skyrocketing. One of the solutions in reducing childhood obesity is to make mandatory physical education classes, and also lengthen the time period of the P.E. classes. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) recommends that, “Schools should provide 150 minutes of instructional physical education for elementary school children, and 225 minutes for middle and high school students per week for the entire school year.” Also, NASPE believes that “A quality physical education program provides learning opportunities,…

Schools alone cannot solve the obesity epidemic in our nation, but they do lay a strong foundation for establishing healthy eating habits and ensuring physical activity. Schools play an expediential piece because 95 percent of children are enrolled in school and it allows us to reach the majority of children in society. Endorsing physical education and healthy eating has been endorsed by schools, this is not a new expectation. Research connects shows that healthy eating habits not only assist with internal health but links physical activity, nutritional programs and academic performance. Investigations performed by care2.com reveals “since students began eating healthier lunches, test scores and grades have significantly improved across the school, far fewer students have been suspended or expelled, and behavioral issues decreased to such an extent that the school found it no longer needed to keep a police officer on campus to respond to out-of-control students”. Schools can assist students with adopting and maintain healthier eating behaviors, which will benefit performance within the…

Childhood obesity is a huge health problem in United States that affects about 12.5 million children and teens in this country alone. Since 1960 scientist have been monitoring obesity problem in United States and between 1980’s and 1990’s they have seen a drastic increase in childhood obesity from about 5% to sky high 15% which is a concerning number for young people. There are many different reasons why young people develop obesity in this country. The major reason why children become overweight is a bad food diet, eating fast food and not exercising enough throughout the day. Today’s lifestyle and technology allows people to buy food quickly at local fast food places, it is quick, convenient and cheap. Most people do not have time to come home after all day at work and cook a fresh and healthy dinner for the family. It is easier to stop at “Kentucky Fried Chicken” for example and buy dinner for entire family for under $25 which is almost impossible to do at home. Access for children to fast food places is easier than ever before, and most beverages that young people drink contain High Fructose Corn Syrup that replaced sugar in the 1970’s but causes young people to gain weight as fast as sugar does. Biggest problem in childhood obesity is definitely the food choices that we make for us and our children but also we cannot forget about the lack of exercise, most people do not get enough exercise so they stay healthy and become over weight. Also school nutrition’s should be friendlier to healthy diets and fruits instead of vending machines. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in America and it seems that it is not going away but in fact it might get bigger in near future if we do not do anything about it. With better food choices, more exercise and help from the government we can overcome this growing epidemic in USA.…

The past three decades in the world have seen the number of young people with obesity increase by nearly a triple. This is according to reports from the National Center for Health Statistics (Eisenberg, Radunovich, & Brennan, 2013). Obesity is rarely caused by genetic or hormonal defects, and the main reason for the high occurrence of obesity, therefore, is the high intake of calories than an individual can burn. As much as the major reasons for the overall increase in the number of overweight and obese adolescents is not known, the most common theory is that the society has become more successful. This implies that adolescents…

Factors such as unhealthy food choices on school campuses, lack of physical activities in schools, and inadequate health education for America’s youth are the main causes of childhood obesity in America. Although public schools could have a large impact on creating a healthier generation of children, many more accomplishments would have to occur in order to see a complete reformation. Firstly, the American culture would have to be completely revolutionized. Supersized meals and poor exercise habits would have to be abolished in order to see drastic changes. Secondly, parents would have to embrace the health and fitness ideals their children are being taught at school. Healthy, nutritious meals and exercise patterns could not stop once school is dismissed. Parents would have to adopt these principles and implement them into their homes. Finally, legislation would have to be passed that integrates health education and physical fitness classes as core subjects. These specific changes would create bright children that are eager to learn. Also, healthy minds and bodies would allow children to reach their full potential academically, socially, and physically. As John F. Kennedy once said, “Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual…
