Ocean Acidification Research Paper
Have you ever been in the ocean before? Have you ever felt it burning your skin? Ocean acidification is becoming a great problem in our world. Ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease of the oceans pH levels due to lots of CO₂ entering the water from our atmosphere. 30-40% of the carbon dioxide from human activity released into the atmosphere goes into lakes, rivers, and oceans. This is causing the ocean to become more acidic. The ocean's acidity has increased by around 30% since the industrial revolution. This affects all of the oceans. Specifically the Arctic, Antarctic, Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic ocean. In this report will explain what is causing this issue, some effects, and some solutions.

This issue is occurring because of fossil

Here are some caused by ocean acidification. First there are the coral. Coral make calcium shells or skeletons. These are negatively impacted by the increased CO₂ and lowered pH. With this issue the reefs are having great difficulties making their skeletons. This is limiting the protective barriers for the fish. Another animal impacted by the acidification are the shellfish. The acidification has impacted the reproduction of oysters. The lower pH levels are resulting in unsaturated aragonite which is preventing the oysters from reproducing normally. Fish are another animal affected by this issue. The lower pH levels is affecting the water that the fish absorb into their bodies. This changes their bodies pH levels, giving them a condition called acidosis. This can mess up how the fish’s body works. It can stunt their growth as well as using up the energy used for basic tasks such as breathing. Not only animals are affected by the acidification of the ocean. Plants and algae are also affected. Some of the plants will be able to adapt to the acidic conditions others won’t. They use the CO₂ to make energy with the sun. Seagrasses are nurseries for little fishies. Scientists found better growth and reproduction rates in these plants. Overall the effects of ocean acidification will create huge changes in the marine ecosystem. This could be extinction of specific coral and snails. This will create less food and habitats for sea creatures. These are some positive and negative effects of ocean

Your Response to Q1: The bodies of water on Earth through evaporation enter the atmosphere. Vaporization also happens when plants and animals add water through transpiration. Water vapors gather in the atmosphere creating clouds with condensation. This is when precipitation forms and falls to Earth. After it falls to Earth and gathers back in the ground and bodies of water, the cycle begins again. As all Earth's cycle coincide, heavy amounts C02 are evaporated into the atmosphere due to a tremendous amount of industrial plants. Once evaporated the CO2 is absorbed into condensation and released as precipitation (or what we call acid rain). This is a form of pollution and is not helping the oceans in anyway. This is lowering the levels of pH in the ocean. pH plays a significant role in the oceans ecosystem, in the case of a rapid change in pH levels aquatic life can become stressed or die. Meaning aquatic life is unable to adjust to…

Acid rain is usually a result of human air pollution such as emissions of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. These compounds react with those in the atmosphere causing acids to be produced and in turn causing precipitation to be acidic in nature. The negative impact of acid rain is evident in ecosystems. Acid rain changes the PH levels of rivers and lakes. Animals such as fish are very susceptible to changes in PH and therefore are unable to survive if the change is too drastic. Plankton and invertebrates are put even more at risk. Acid rain in water environments can also affect plant life. On land, acid rain damages forests in high altitudes and also lowers the fertility of soil as important nutrients and minerals are removed from it. These impacts on different aspects of the environment have a trickling down effect that negatively influence entire…

In The Truth about Ocean “Acidification”, by Patrick Moore, the term “ocean acidification” has been fabricated, and people do not see the positive effects it has on marine life. In 2003, many articles on ocean acidification were published. Moore challenges one of the article’s hypothesis that corals will cease to grow by mid-century, and ocean acidification will impact fisheries worldwide. Moore emphasizes that there are five key reasons why the ocean acidification narrative is a fabrication. First, the concentration of Co2 was much higher in the earth’s atmosphere during the Cambrian period. Next, most of the invertebrates with the ability to produce calcium carbonate armor are capable of rapid adaptation. Third, there are two distinct physiological…

They play big roles in the food web and in the carbon cycle. After a zooplankton dies and sink to the sea floor, their bodies still carry their shells and are turned into rock or sediment. Since zooplankton can reproduce so fast they can adapt to acidity better than bigger creatures. The only thing that we are not sure of is will acidification affect jellyfish. It’s possible that jellyfish can start to dominate the ecosystem if they can thrive in warm acidic water.…

The acidity of seawater is determined by the amount of hydrogen ions in solution , which is then measured on the pH scale. The higher the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution, the lower the pH of the solution. As stated in the previous paragraph, carbonic acid ( CO3-2) releases hydrogen ions ( H+) into the solution. If the sea water absorbs more carbon dioxide and then more carbonic acid will be formed as well. Which means the ocean will releases large quantities of hydrogen ions. Thus lowering the pH of the ocean. “ Ocean acidification: A greater threat than climate change or Overfishing,” reports that since the industrial revolution the pH of the ocean has dropped from 8.2 to 8.1. This change in the pH of water over the past 150 years is the greatest seen over the past several million years. ( Burner W. 2008…

This sea is predicted as how the oceans of the planet will look like within the next century. The acidification that might happen throughout the oceans of the world is mostly caused by the carbon dioxide emitted from smokestacks and tailpipes. (527) Thirty percent of the carbon dioxide released by man has been soaked in the oceans. Many marine organisms cannot survive in these high carbon dioxide concentrated conditions. The evidence from Castello Aragonese proves that this polluted sea is missing thirty-three percent of marine organisms that live outside the vent system. Another significant organism of the chemistry of the ocean is the coral reef. Coral reefs are essential for the ecosystem of the ocean. Ocean acidification is a threat to their existence. According to Jane Lubchenco, ocean acidification is global warming’s “equally evil twin.” (qtd. in…

“Some coral species lose their skeletons altogether” (Fine & Tchernov, pg 9, par 4), “and skeletal growth of recent recruits can be disrupted” (Cohen, pg 9, par 4). So the disruption of the skeletal growth can then make the reefs weaker and more vulnerable to damage and destruction. The acidity of the ocean doesn't just effect the skeletal growth of the coral reefs either. “This is damaging many ocean species that use calcium carbonate to form their skeletons and shells. Studies have shown that calcium carbonate formation is disrupted if water becomes too acidic”(Fujita, pg 2, par 8). So not only coral reefs being effected in skeletal growth, but all organisms that have an outer shell or exoskeleton have trouble developing a strong shell as the acid restricts the calcium production. Another effect that climate change brings about is rising sea levels. “The most obvious consequence of sea level rise will be an upward shift in species distributions. Most species are expected to be able to keep pace with predicted rates of sea level rise, with the exception of some slow-growing, longlived species such as many corals” (Knowlton, pg 10, par 1).” However, dramatic ecological changes could result from decreased habitat availability within a…

Ocean acidification is caused by CO2 in the atmosphere when it reacts with water it creates carbonic acid. It's a significant and harmful consequence of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that we don't see or feel because its effects are happening underwater. When carbon dioxide is absorbed by seawater a chemical reaction occurs that reduces the seawaters pH, carbonate ion concentration, and saturation states of biologically significant calcium carbonate minerals. It decreases the pH of seawater, meaning it increases the seawater’s acidity. Over the past 250 years, ocean acidity has increased by 30 percent. At least one-quarter of the carbon dioxide CO2 released by burning coal, oil and gas doesn't stay in the air, but instead dissolves…

In this article, Melker clarifies the aftermath of the dropping pH’s effect on ocean life. The article states that scientists are noticing recent changes on how carbon dioxide is dramatically changing our oceans. Scientists say that ever since the start of the Industrial Revolution, the ocean has absorbed over 550 billion tons of carbon dioxide, and continues to absorb. In recent years, oyster shells have been dying off more and more. The acidity of the seawater is eating away at the oysters’ shells. As acidity increases, shell building organisms have a tougher time extracting calcium carbonate they need for their shells and skeletal systems. Because of this, shells become thinner, there is a slower growth process, and as a result, higher death rates. Although it doesn’t seem as if it would make a big difference, even small drops in pH have a huge effect on the ocean, and the organisms living in it. Acidification is also affecting coral reefs. Shellfish and coral reefs are the building blocks of ocean life. Reefs serve as important habitats for marine life. More than half of the ocean’s fish will live in a coral reef sometime in their life. Shellfish are being affected by the dropping pH as well as other organisms. Shellfish are eaten by many animals, and if they were to die off the food chain would get messed up.…

The earth first started off as one huge continent called Pangea. Pangea was surrounded by one giant body of water. Over the course of millions and millions of years, Pangea began to break off and separate. After millions of years of movement, that is why the earth has the formation that it currently has, with seven large continents. With an area of 41,105,000 square miles, the Atlantic Ocean is currently just a little over half the size of the Pacific Ocean. The plates of the earth have never stopped moving. As the plates continue to shift, the Atlantic Ocean continues to grow each year, while the Pacific Ocean continually shrinks every year. While the Atlantic Ocean grows approximately one inch every year, the Pacific Ocean shrinks approximately one inch every year. If this pattern continues, millions and millions of years from now the Atlantic Ocean will be larger than the Pacific Ocean.…

Ocean acidification is hurting many sea creatures in the ocean. It is also hurting the world food chain. Ocean acidification is when carbon dioxide (Co2) is released into the ocean and the saltwater consumes the Co2. Many creatures have trouble living and reproducing when the ph level is low. It is hurting the world food chain because many people rely on sea creatures for food and if they are slowly dying, there won't be enough food in the world to hold all these people.…

Ever since the beginning of time, Earth’s oceans have maintained a stable acidity. Oceans currently absorb a third of human carbon dioxide emissions at about twenty two million tons each day (Ocean). The carbon dioxide that has been consumed by oceans, slowly turns into carbonic acid which affects the lives of many aquatic life. Continuous emissions of these gases will raise the acidity by 0.5 pH levels by the end of the century; the increase in acidity causes aquatic shell growth come to a halt (Ocean). This rise in oceanic acidity affects lives of aquatic creatures…
