Oedipus Literary Analysis Oedipus the King Fate is described as something that is predetermined or destined. In life there are many obstacles and challenges, it is our choice whether we choose to face them and conquer them. The way we face these obstacles relies on the way we handle the situation; we can face them with hearts full of emotion or we can face with them with rational thinking. The way we conquer these challenges is what makes us better human beings, in the end it is our choice. Oedipus the King, a Greek tragedy written by Sophocles, tells the story of a man who is escaping his predetermined destiny. He showed these characteristics when he defeated the Great Sphinx and her confusing riddle. Oedipus knew no man could ever defeat her, but by using knowledge and logic he solved her riddle. However, Oedipus never used the power his mind possessed when it came to killing his biological father and placing a curse upon himself. Anger and transgression is what led Oedipus to his downfall. Although, like many humans, Oedipus had many flaws and imperfections; not thinking clearly and letting his emotions get the best of him was a flaw that he was created with.
