Their first mistake was to agree with moving the trial to downtown Los Angeles courthouse, had the trial been in an white neighborhood the jury's decision might have been different. In addition, they thought that bringing former detective Mark Fuhrman to the stand was a good move, even though they knew about his past racist acts, and by doing so they basically ruined the prosecution. Also, they brought up a large amount of scientific evidence by explaining DNA, however they took a long time and, since DNA wasn't well known at the time, the explanation became not only confusing but also helped the defense's argument about LAPD's mishandling the evidence. Thus the jury didn't respond to the evidence in the way the prosecutors expected them to.
Equally important, the prosecution did not have enough people on the case, meanwhile the defense team was made up by a large group of very intelligent people, thus the prosecution should've asked for a third person to help with a different point of view or strategy. Simpson was lucky to be who he is, because by having such power he was able to hire an amazing defense team that was able to point out every mishandled evidence pointed by the prosecution.
