The Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this year has been questioned and considered a global issue as some common viruses along with several other issues are present at that time. It is essential for the competing Olympians to train, eat clean food and stay healthy in order to perform at their highest potential. Viruses such as the Zika virus are currently being transmitted in Brazil through mosquito bites. This is an issue as it poses a threat to everyone in close range of the mosquitos including the Olympians and the hosts of the event. However, an advantage of the Olympics being held in Rio is that it is bringing money into Brazil and making a public attraction. Firstly, during summer there are many problems that occur, this includes heat, rain, contaminated water, poor sanitation and prolonged government negligence. In a ‘Global Post’ article it reveals that only 40% percent of sewage in Rio gets treated, the rest clogs the city’s water ways, which eventually makes its way into the ocean, where beaches are more toxic than pristine. Furthermore, an additional. 80-100 tons of garbage is drifted out into the rivers and beaches in Rio on a daily basis. Most of these issues are from natural causes and cannot be controlled, yet the Olympians are still willing to risk their health and possibly risk their chances of competing in the 2016 Olympics. As the heat, rain puddles and general poor cleanliness continues, it forms a perfect living ground for these mosquitos to increase in numbers and have a large scale effect on the Olympians, tourists and the Rio de Janeiro community.
