Oma Life On The Plantation Short Story
Out on the plantation hot about 90 degrees it felt more like 100 degrees with balls of sweat dripping from Ilaria and Oma faces as they work side by side in the cotton field.

Not daring to talk to each other nor the rest of the enslaved people as they worked in fear of Massa Whitley who was watching over them like a hawk on his horse.

Gripping tightly on his rope like he was ready to take aim at any moment.

Flashing back Oma was thinking how there were major differences between being back on the slave ship with all those people chained up and witnessing people getting thrown overboard the life of getting whipped for not eating it being hot and packed the air filled with the aroma of waste from others.

“The overseers wore dazzling white shirts and broad shadowy hats. The oiled barrels of their shotguns flashed in the sunlight. Their faces in memory are utterly blank.” Black and White men are the symbol of ethnic abhorrence. “The prisoners wore dingy gray-and-black zebra suits, heavy as canvas, sodden with sweat. Hatless, stooped, they chopped weeds in the fierce heat, row after row, breathing the acrid dust of boll-weevil poison.” The narrator expresses the unforgiving situations the slaves worked in; they didn’t even have a choice which is the saddest part. Yet the slave masters lived a different elegant life.…

After Alison and Tara ran off into the woods and relaxed by the lake. They both told each other stories that they have always wished would come true. They imagined those stories coming true by acting them out in an imaginary play scene. They sang “Kokomo at the top of [their] lungs over and over again” (Evans 39), wishing that they were somewhere else than at their grandmothers house. They would run off into the woods to get away from their grandmother Lydia, to get away from all the controlling rules and regulations that she has placed over the girls. However Lydia did not place harsh rules on Alison, which might be because Alison is the favorited granddaughter. After a while of the girls running off, Lydia finally had it. Lydia did not want the girls “disobeying her and running off” (Evans 40), anymore. So Lydia scared the girls by stating that “snakes are in the lake… [they] love water” (Evans 40). Lydia tells this little white lie so that she can manipulate the girls into thinking that the only safe place is to stay inside of that once luxurious house. However, Lydia’s little white lie spiraled into an occurrence of both day and night terrors for Tara. Tara could not sleep by herself anymore because of a night terror that caused her to toss and turn right off the top bunkbed and smack her head hard onto the solid cold floor. Startled, Alison was the one who ran to Tara’s side. When Lydia heard the loud…

    An Empire for Slavery

Some slaves in Texas approached responsibility for work in such a manner that they were given a great deal of leeway for their own daily job assignments and were even given supervisory positions over other slaves. Some bondsman, working as managers, tended to plantations and farms in the absence of the owners. This practice is quite remarkable when we sometimes visualize a slave as a black man with a chain and heavy ball attached to one foot. The conception of manager slaves apparently was propagated in such an…

This turns out to be an ironic contrast to life at the Weylin plantation, where a slave who visits his wife without his master's permission is brutally whipped. Perhaps a more painful realization for Dana is how this cruel treatment oppresses the mind. "Slavery of any kind fostered strange relationships," she notes, for all the slaves feel the same strange combination of fear, contempt, and affection toward Rufus that she does.…

Through her narrative, readers capture a glimpse of the horrors of slavery in the American South, which include murder, rape, and abuse. Linda describes the exchanging of property, which include her and her family members. In her narrative, she says, "Pity me, and pardon me, O virtuous reader! You never knew what it is to be a slave; to be entirely unprotected by law or custom; to have the laws reduce you to the condition of a chattel, entirely subject to the will of another" (930). Using the simile of a slave as chattel, she tells the reader that they will never know what it means to be a person treated as an object, attacking the laws that allow this to happen.…
