Chapter Ten
Being woken up against my will is already annoying enough, but when it's someone you don't particularly like at an obnoxiously early time in the morning with a pounding headache and only a vague memory of a weird dream, it makes for quite the attitude.
"Ugh, just wake up already! I don't even know why I'm doing this anymore."
"You're doing it to get back on Justin's good side Susan, we can all tell."
"Shut up. Did I ask you?"
"No, and I'm glad you didn't."
No matter how annoying their arguing was, I was determined to go back to sleep. Whatever that weird dream was about that baby kept me tossing and turning all night and I needed at least some sleep.
"WAKE UP LOSER!"
Susan had resorted to shaking me awake, which …show more content…
honestly only made me want to shake some sense into her. With my eyes still closed, I gripped tightly on her arm, digging my slightly long fingernails into her wrist and pulling it off of my left shoulder.
"Don't you dare touch me," I bit out.
Opening my eyes slowly, I saw that only Hannah and Susan were in the room.
"You can't boss me around," Susan spat. "If anything I'm the one that can boss you around, since I'm obviously better."
I threw Susan's other hand off of me in disgust and got up quickly, wincing at the pain. She smirked, thinking that she hit home with what she said. Not in the mood to deal with her, I let whatever rude comments I had slip and hoped she would leave me in peace for just a day.
"That's not what Justin thinks."
She huffed and walked out, her resting git face in clear view.
"Bloody hell, that took way too long," I said, rubbing my temples.
"You okay Amalia?" Hannah asked, clearly concerned. About what though, I had no idea.
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine. You can go, I'm going to get changed and get my stuff."
She could tell I really wasn't fine, but she let it go as she walked to breakfast alone and left me to my silence for a bit.
After my nice relaxation time, I went in the Great Hall to eat breakfast. Of course, a group of Slytherins, led by none other than Pansy Parkinson, decided it would be hilarious to block the entrance and not let me pass.
"Hey Amy," she hissed maniacally.
"My name's not Amy," I glared back. "Look Pansy-"
"Oops, sorry Amber, just wanted to see how you and Loony Lovegood have been. Heard you two had a thing."
Her posse laughed and I just rolled my eyes. "We're going just like you and Draco. We aren't."
I couldn't help but snicker at her face. If looks could kill, I'd be so dead, however I wasn't in the mood to care.
"Listen here you rat-"
"Do you have a problem, Pansy?" A young, Slytherin girl said to her, walking up from inside of the Great Hall. It was obvious by her tone that she did not like Pansy in the slightest.
Not like I'm surprised or anything. No one seems to like Pansy except for her group.
She turned to me and winked, her short brown hair whipping with the sassy movements of her head.
Pansy just sneered at the encounter and huffed angrily.
"Just go Pansy, no one even wants you here," the Slytherin said as Pansy and her annoying crew complained and walked to the Slytherin table.
"Hey, thanks for that. I've been getting a lot of crap from her lately for standing up against Snape, it's nice for someone to have my back against her. I wasn't really in the mood to deal with her today anyway."
She smiled at my thanks. "No problem. Amalia, right? I'm Addison Grace, nice to meet you. I heard all about your encounter with Snape, and I'll just say it, it's pretty amazing. For you to have the guts to stand up for Luna like that? Pretty awesome if you ask me."
"Nah, it wasn't awesome, I was scared to death.
But you with Miss Queen Bee Pansy over there, that was awesome."
She just shook her head. "Miss Queen Bee couldn't even touch me. She's too scared that I'll beat her up. She insulted me on the train here, so I insulted her image by making her walk out of my compartment like she'd seen a ghost," as she reminisced her memory, a smirk appeared on her lips and I knew she was definitely not one to mess with, but that she'd definitely be a good friend of mine.
"Yeah, I'm sure Draco's goons aren't too fond of me either. I miraculously charmed one of them with a spell my brother taught me. Came in handy," I told her.
"Oh, I bet. How did you even know Pansy liked Draco?"
"Since she's been annoying me quite a lot lately, I figured why not do some digging with all of the extra time I had on my hands," I joked. Addison was quite the personality, and it was refreshing to be able to talk with her like we were.
"What do you say we work together to hatch some more plans like that later on? We could be a dynamic duo," She sneakily winked and nudged me a bit.
I grinned back, whispering one last thing in her ear before we parted …show more content…
ways.
"Of course, I'd love that. Besides, nobody suspects a Hufflepuff."
~~~~~
The boring day just seemed to drag on with nothing to do, and my friends had been asking all my head and what was up with me today. I hadn't seen Hermione again since last night, nor had I seen Ron, Harry or any other Gryffindor friend I had made. I still wasn't sure if I wanted to talk to anyone about the awkward Slytherin talk after potions with Snape the little while ago, but I did have to get answers. It didn't help that my head was still awful and I didn't know what to do about it. After all of my classes were done, I only had the flying lesson for first years left. Thanks to Cedric, I already knew how to fly a broom, so this was going to be extremely boring.
Surprisingly, the day was quite nice for flying, which only meant that this would be easier for all of the first years who didn't know how to fly. Some of them would need the luck. Fred and George were playing quidditch once with Ced, and they said to me how awful the school's brooms are, since they don't quite fly straight, and they most definitely weren't the most comfortable brooms ever.
Anyway, Susan had yet again succeeded to steal Justin from me, against his will I assumed, but I was glad this time that I had Hannah and Ernie to talk to.
As the three of us walked over to the neatly lined brooms, we saw that Susan and Justin were already there, with the rest of their row filled, and only two extra brooms next to them.
"Oh, Hannah, we saved you some brooms!"
Hannah, being the sweetheart she is, looked right to me and Ernie, worried about the broom situation. "Guys, there's only two brooms left. I think we should just go to the other side, there's three empty spots right there."
Right as she said that, a spot out of the three was taken up by someone.
"Oh um..." Hannah struggled with what to say, but I just put on a smile for her.
"Hannah, you and Ernie can go by Susan and Justin. I'll just go on the other side."
She gave me a pitiful look, and I just shrugged. "You sure Amalia?" Ernie asked. "I could go with you, so you're not alone."
"No, it's okay guys, really. I'll be fine."
Ernie shrugged and walked over to Justin, but Hannah stayed behind. "Are you really sure, Amalia?"
"Yeah, I'm fine, don't worry. Go with Ernie, I'll just be on the other side."
She reluctantly left, and I walked to the other side of them, taking the only empty broom left. A small, Asian girl stood to one side of me, and on the other just so happened to be Luna Lovegood.
"Oh, Amalia, thank you for the other day, with Snape. I thought for a second the Nargles changed the temperature of the potion when I wasn't looking. They always seem to do that, you know."
Her dreamy voice made it seem like she was tired, as she stared off into space seemingly looking at nothing in particular.
"Nargles...?"
"Oh yes, those pesky little critters.
They seem to like messing with people, you see, and they also seem to be stealing some of my socks..."
"Looks like you all have figured out how to begin. Put your hands over your broomsticks, and say 'Up!'" Madam Hooch called from the front. Her silver hair seemed to stick up in odd directions, and her yellow eyes were quite piercing.
I followed her directions, and I put my right hand over the worn, noticeably old broomstick, commanding it up. I was the first one to get it to listen, and on my first try as well. Everyone else seemed to have issues with it.
"Nice job! You're Diggory's sister, right? Quite the flyer, your brother is, he'd make an amazing seeker."
"He's trying out for the team this year, Madam Hooch," I replied to her. All this attention I had been getting recently was unsettling, and I didn't like it one bit. I had never been one for being the centre of attention, and this was no exception. Susan seemed to think I thought otherwise, since she was giving me a glare of pure envy. She could've still been mad at me for this morning, but I really couldn't care less.
"Great, great. Now," Hooch finished, then gestured to us all, "you must grip your broom like this, and sit like so, otherwise you'll go flying off of your
broom."
She corrected our grips, then gave us more directions.
"Now, when I blow my whistle, I'll need you to kick off of the ground hard, rise a few feet but keep your brooms steady, then you'll come down by leaning forward just slightly. And please, let's not have a repeat of Potter, or Longbottom for that matter."
"What happened with Potter?" Luna asked in her dreamy voice.
"Let's just say he decided to fly his broom at his whim."
"Well, what about Neville?" Hannah couldn't help but ask. I didn't think she knew him that well, but I shrugged it off. Thinking about it was not really ideal at the moment.
"He took quite a fall, couldn't control his broom, poor kid. Broke his wrist. Now, on my count, three- two-"
After the shrill whistle, we kicked off the ground, my broom seemingly higher than the others. I just had too much practice, I supposed.
The rest of the class seemed to be full of learning stuff I already knew, and compliments on how much of a natural me, among a few others, were. She also mentioned how great at quidditch I'd be, but I did grow up with Cedric, Fred, George, and even Charlie who taught me a few tricks on how to play. I was only a natural because I knew what I was doing.
