The essay I choose to write about was Maya Angelou’s “Sister Flowers”. I believe that the purpose of this essay was to describe an important part of this person’s life that helped them to become a better writer/poet/reader and also describe what I think to be this persons mentor. This essay talks about how Mrs. Bertha Flowers decides to take Marguerite Henderson home with her to give her good books to read and to read her an excerpt form a book. I think it is a very well written and extremely descriptive essay, it makes you feel like you are there with them listening to the pages turning and almost taste the tea cookie or smell the vanilla from Mrs. Flower’s home.…
In my first essay, I wrote a rhetorical analysis The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This essay was created to interpret that the American Dream can never truly be achieved no matter what you may have or do. While writing this essay I choose this novel because not only have I read the piece, but I found it interesting enough to analysis especially when it came to the American Dream concept. While writing this piece I took a risk and wrote on a whole novel instead of a smaller piece which would have been a greater opinion. The reason I choose this was not only because I loved the book, but I wanted to see how I would have done analysis this novel and testing my writing skills. In this essay, I took on the challenge and while I believed…
I also feel that there is an entertainment perspective in the essay, especially in paragraph 12 where Frye tries to bring in some humor to the topic. The prejudices and clichés which are put up as pretence…
Joan Didion's tone in her essay "On Keeping a Notebook," is explanatory and a little sarcastic. She wasn't so much explaining how to keep a notebook as she was explaining why she kept hers the way she did; which made the reader interested in reading it. Didion's sarcasm comes from her explanation.…
I relate to his high school experiences because I too despised required writing and reading. Once I began to read novels or stories that peaked my interest, I grew to love reading. Everyone can think of specific encounters they have had in the past that may have ignited their passion for a subject or changed their views on a certain topic. In reading this essay, I am reminded of situations I encountered in high school or throughout life where I let go of my self-consciousness and was able to experience true…
The reflective writings for each chapter were really easy to do, I thought of it like a journal. They did cause me to think about my life at OU, how my classes were going, and how I was adjusting to being at college, and I did like that part. The reflective writings made me think about the things that were going well and others that I needed to improve on. Also, it caused me to realize the differences between college and high school, and what I specifically needed to focus on to be successful.…
Though I get the main purpose of this essay, I don’t really think it has created an effect on me. Part of it is because I cannot relate to the character, another is that I know the narrator too well that I know what is going to happen. Everyone knows what is going to happen. Her personality is so set in stone that the room for interpretation is limited. We all know she is super anxious, worrisome, and over-protective from the way she talks to the audience, the way she thought of another woman over the screen, the way she rolls the stroller on the street. In addition, everything is so crystal clear and evident that there is no much need to go back and flip through the story once again to understand the underlining purpose. The ambiguity element is missing in this essay, thus makes this work less appealing and less effective on…
To be completely honest, writing this essay was easier for me because as I read the first two chapters, I had already known what I wanted to write about and how I wanted to write it. Reading this book and writing this essay has taught me about the importance of a college degree and how important social class can be to people.…
Some thing that really caught my eye about this essay is the fact that even though it was a personal narrative he rarely used "I" or "me". Instead of actually going in to depth about his song choices, he uses a different approach and reflects it back in time. If I could borrow one aspect of this essay It would have to be the way Ferris really incorporates the music and the period of time the music was in to bring everything together. Also, something I liked was that Ferris used "we" a lot to relate back to experiences many people have had like him.…
My essay was mainly about the decisions DeShawn made and how it impacted his life as a whole. An evaluation of the book was given to clearly understand what the book was trying to portray to me and my overall opinion of the book. Ultimately an outline of “If I Grow Up” and a quick summary of the whole book and its main characters and the major conflict of the whole book. We should learn many things from this book including life lessons and themes which can help you learn and decide let you decide if you'll grow…

Essay writing was a major part of the class. We wrote essay on race and ethnicity, gay matters, language technique essays. Each essay taught us about a different style or form of writing. Comparison and contrast essays taught us how to write an essay comparing two similar things. This type of essay was my favorite to write. In my essay I compared the careers of Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. The most difficult essay for me to write was the argument essay in which we were to defend a point using strong argument skills. For my argument essay I supported the argument that rap music is music of resistance. I can honestly say my essay skills have improved tremendously over the course of this year thanks to the many skills learned in this class.…
The beginning essay, the autobiographical narrative, was actually an enjoyable start to the class. It was not an easy essay, but it also was not difficult. The only thing that troubled me was the topic of the essay itself. Seeing as how the event that I wrote about happened almost 6 years ago it was more than a moderate difficulty to remember what exactly happened. Thankfully, I did not have to document everything exactly at certain parts, because as Professor Thoenen had explained, it did not have to be a word for word documentation of what happened. Also, I discovered the…
After I read this chapter, I changed my mind. I thought that the essay is just to tell my ideas, but it is wrong. The essay is kinds of entertainment for reader.…
