Reflective Essay on English Class
English 100w was a very informative and interesting class. It was taught by professor E. Cochran, who is a wonderful person and excellent teacher. We covered lots of criteria material and discussed topics during the tenure of the class. We also learned many new ideas about the incidents going on around the world, which were great for us. Reading skills were also honed while reading various essays and stories.
Essay writing was a major part of the class. We wrote essay on race and ethnicity, gay matters, language technique essays. Each essay taught us about a different style or form of writing. Comparison and contrast essays taught us how to write an essay comparing two similar things. This type of essay was my favorite to write. In my essay I compared the careers of Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. The most difficult essay for me to write was the argument essay in which we were to defend a point using strong argument skills. For my argument essay I supported the argument that rap music is music of resistance. I can honestly say my essay skills have improved tremendously over the course of this year thanks to the many skills learned in this class.
For example, we learned grammar and correction skills though having the opportunity to correct our class mates’ essays using the review tools on Microsoft word. We read our peers essays, correct the grammatical errors, gave suggestions to word placement, and sentence usage. Reviewing and correctional skills learned will be very helpful in the future as we continue to write essays during college. Seeing other people correct my essays helped me view my essays from different viewpoints. Sometimes letting someone else read your paper can help you come up with an idea to use in your paper that you might not have noticed before.
Through our class textbook, Pop Perspectives, we learned how to read and recognize key points in stories and essays. We read four or five essay every few week and would take a reading quiz on them. The

As well as when it’s necessary to write a certain type of essay and when it’s not. I am unsure on what kinds of essays we will be going over during the duration of this semester but by the end of it, I am assuming we will be able to know how to write a narrative, argumentative, research, comparison, persuasive, descriptive and cause and effect essay. I am sure we will know the difference between all of the essays, know when it is the most appropriate time to use them and understand the steps it takes to write the particular type of essay. I expect to learn about the different essays in this class because I believe it will allow me to know which type of writing style I will need to use during situations in the future, like developing a resume for a future…

learned that to write an effective Essay you should first drift the topic of your essay for example make a diagram of the topic or issues you are going to talk about in your Essay. The topic should be in the middle and start to think about the subjects that are related to your topic, or subjects that will help you get your point across to your readers more affectively. I’ve also learned that by visualizing your story from the beginning to the end can help you to see the picture of what you want to talk about, what can be also helpful is while you visualizing your story you should write down as much information as possible in case you…

Things that teachers could do to help me have an easier time writing an essay is to not give work time in class. Honestly I will probably spend it playing computer games. While I could be doing a worksheet that shows me how to write better. Another thing that could help me is to make mini due dates. I like knowing that I am going at the right pace while I am writing. I also have a few recommendations for students who take this class next semester. The first and biggest one is to get done early. If you get done early you can spend class doing other homework or play games, without being stressed out about finishing your essay. Another tip is to use paper rater. You do a lot of writing in this class, and paper rater can make it so your essays don’t have errors without having to spend a lot of time looking for them. The last is write in the format that you are most comfortable in. I have always been taught to write in the 5 paragraph format, so I always use it if I can. I make me write my stories much faster. Knowing what other people do to pass a class can help you pass the class even if they are smarter than…

Arguably the most important skill that I have learned is that it is essential to plan my essays. Prior to this class, I would just write all of my thoughts down without creating an outline. After that, I would just briefly proofread my essay and that was my final copy. Now, I make sure I spend a decent amount of time on an outline and make it incredibly detailed so that my thoughts are all in line with each other and overall, the essay makes sense. Then, I will read over my rough draft multiple times and have other people proofread it as well, just to make sure that it makes sense and is as clear as it can be. My papers went from taking less than an hour to write to taking 2 or 3 hours at the least.…

Additionally, we learned a lot about the different styles of writing. For instance, informal and formal writing, compare and contrast, and rhetorical analysis. Every essay comes with the MLA format, with signal phrases, quotations marks, and parenthetical citations. This information is very relevant to any paper I will write for a class in the future. I had never before been taught the correct way to do this. The compilation of knowledge this class has given me.…

the assignment was to write a second person point of view informative on how to become any occupation of our choice (Naturally I chose the occupation astronaut, a occupation I knew practically nothing on beyond what I could pick up from Sandra Bullock and George Clooney). The essay was difficult to write, it challenged the entirety of my knowledge of grammar. I persevered and wrote a great paper I was proud of. In that class I learned more than how to better my writing but how to appreciate writing and the power it has. It was that class that made me realize the pen truly is mightier than the sword, as lame as that sounds.…

Even though I never had any problems with English throughout high school, I was worried about how college would be like. I thought it would be completely different from high school, when in fact it is not. Personally, I think taking AELW 940 the first half of the semester prepared me well for English 101. Although, I learned a lot in AELW 940 I still had some things to learn and my essays reflected that during English 101. I had problems with comma splices, run on sentences and poor vocabulary. Since then, I started to read and write more on my own time. I feel this is the key that has helped me improve in my writing although it isn’t perfect yet.…

The marking criteria requires “verbatim examples of comments during the practice session and verbatim examples of what you could have said”. This semester in English 101 has been very demanding for me. In previous years, I generally completed my writing assignments with ease and without having to put much thought or effort into them, but this year, I was required to work for many hours on each of my papers and to proofread them many times in order to receive a good grade. For example, I learned that if I wanted to reach my audience, I had to organize my paper in such a way that everyone could easily understand the organization and the logic behind my ideas. Furthermore, for the first time in my high school career, I welcomed and appreciated the feedback of my peers as a tool that could help with the drafting of my academic papers. I chose to examine three articles from my portfolio…

One of my strong points as a student in English class is critically evaluating a poem or an article that we had previously read. I feel that I excelled the most in those assignments because expressing my opinion on paper along with critiquing is one of my better strengths. Another point that I feel that I am strong in is participating in open class discussions. I try to firmly explain my opinions to my classmates without disrespecting their own beliefs. One of my favorite assignments that we did in class was when we had the opportunity to pick an article out of a nationally known newspaper of our choice and select an article to read and to evaluate and critically analyze it. This assignment introduced the class to how to begin a critical review of an article, film, or an essay. I received a check plus on the assignment and have enjoyed the lessons ever since.…

However, writing is an important thing to know because one will need it throughout his lifetime ranging from school to work. People can do many things with writing, for example, people may express their feelings by writing. Also, inform their audience about a topic. Throughout the course of this semester I have learned a variety of writing skills and techniques that helped me improve as a writer, developed a better understanding and appreciation for activism and the work surrounding it, and lastly participated within the activism community. By obtaining new skills from this class and pushing myself to improve, I can now apply these strategies to future courses that I may take or even carry them with me and continue to improve on them throughout my career. For example, while I may not have to take another English course throughout my time in college, I can still use the same skills that I learned from this class and apply them to both school and everyday life. Not only was this class about learning skills…
