On the Sidewalk Bleeding
On the Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter
Andy was a 16 years old teenager who had just been stabbed below the ribs. Andy was part of a gang called “The Royals”. Andy just stopped by the shop only to buy some cigarettes and next moment he’s on the ground bleeding, Quote- “He had been stabbed 10 minutes ago.”
Andy had a girlfriend called Laura who he had left when he went to get the cigarettes and she was the only thing he could think of, Quote- “He wondered if Laura was dancing wondered if she had missed him yet.”
Few people had walked past Andy and as they noticed that he was wearing the ‘The Royals jacket’ they refused to help the bleeding teenager but just left him. Andy didn’t know joining a popular gang group would be end of his life.
Andy is in complete denial, Quote- “I can’t be dying, No that’s stupid. That doesn’t make any sense at all.” He still thinks he’s going to go to the convenience store, back to the dance, apologize to Laura for being so late, and smoke a cigarette outside with his buddies. However as time goes so late, and his body tell him that he is, in fact, dying, he chooses to accept it. In the last few minutes of his life, Andy realized that there is no pride in being a Royal, a part of a gang. The title and the jacket made seem like a faceless Royals to other faceless Guardians, Quote “He wondered suddenly if the Guardians who had ambushed him and knifed him and ever once realised he was Andy”
The police came over to inverstigate the scene over Andy’s death and when he saw Andy’s jacket he got his note book out and headed up “The Royal” Then he continued on writing, Quote- “A Royal, he said then he began

When one thinks of a tiger, they normally think of a strong and courageous animal. On the other hand, Andy is the complete opposite. Andy is a weak and cowardice human being. During the novel, Monty shows Andy a picture he drew. In this picture there was a tiger and he had put tears on it. The tiger in this picture is metaphorically representing Andy. Monty said, “Well I drew a picture last week at school, and the teacher wanted to know why I put tears on my tiger. I told her he was sad. Like you get sometimes” (125). As seen from this quote, Monty knew how Andy actually felt. Everyone else in Hazelwood believed that Andy was doing well and improving. Andy was in great depression and only Monty knew that. After Andy committed suicide all of Andy`s pupils called him a coward for killing himself. On page 173, Gerald states, “You`re a coward and a sellout!”; Gerald had his own problems and thought Andy was selfish for killing himself. Although, these people did not know what Andy was going through, he had felt very guilty and was depressed all of the time.…

The image of teenagers has changed over the many years with Stanley Cohen’s Folk Devils and Moral Panics: The Creation of Mods and Rocker (1972); has led the innovative discussion on the constantly growing image of the teenager. He used moral panics to describe the emergence of individuals or groups to become defined ‘as a threat to societal values and interests’ [1]. His book has been evolutionary to the perspective of teenagers and his inspection of youth gangs; most notably the ‘Mods and Rockers’. This links to the London riots of 2011 that had shook the nation, the tension between gangs and the police grew resulting into chaos. Such a social issue is viewed as a taboo of the current era and the media took a pivotal role to generate facts and spread anxiety and fear; thus creating a Moral Panic in the UK.…
