Divided city
Divided City by Theresa Breslin
The novel Divided City by Theresa Breslin Is set in gloomy Glasgow, Scotland, in the recent times. The story is aimed at teenagers and adults alike and concerns the asylum seeking problems and associated racism towards illegal immigrants who had arrived in Glasgow at this time. I really enjoyed this novel as it was good to see each supporters of Rangers and Celtic, be such good friends. Even in today's modern time, it's refreshingly different to see the 'old firm' barrier being obliterated, with the two pals showing total trust and friendship with each other, despite their religious differences. Which of course, this is the way it should be with society. The novel also had a really good storyline and plot to which I learned a lot more about racism and sectarianism from this book. It profiles both how dull Scotland can be and how wonderful it can be when you see, so called enemy's, be friends.
Graham finds a young man, an asylum seeker, lying stabbed, bleeding in the street, crying for help. Graham doesn't want to help as he might get stopped and questioned by the police, who might see him as a suspect for the possible assault on this man. Graham has to make the right choice, it's all down to him if he wants to save that young wounded man's life or face the wrath of his mother for disobeying her instructions, when she finds out that he took the risky shortcut home and came across the violated male. He is scared that his mum will ban him from playing football with his new best pal, when she finds out he disobeyed her wishes and this will prevent him getting into the Glasgow City Football team.
Graham is an ordinary young teenager, playing football, boisterous and getting up to mischief, etc, He is placed in some awkward and scary circumstances, but comes through in the end. We first see Graham in the novel straight away, when he takes a shortcut home from football training to save money to buy chips, This decision leads

Skrzynecki uses the displacement of European migrants, in particular Polish migrants, to demonstrate how a personal connection to one’s homeland and society at a time of insecurity and discomfort can form a sense of belonging with others. As with many migrants the Skrzynecki family was forced to flee their beloved Poland for personal safety at a time of war. “Migrant hostel”, through the use of simile, demonstrates how those of similar culture band together in times of need to form a sense of belonging to each other as a community. “Nationalities sought / Each other out instinctively- / Like a homing pigeon” indicates a sense of cultural identity from a previous time allowed for the migrants to connect and form a sense of belonging and community in such an unfamiliar place. A different sense of belonging between the immigrants is highlighted in the juxtaposition “To pass in and out of lives / That had only begun / Or were dying” which finishes the poem in a suitably depressing tone because for the migrants, there is no sense of connectedness to the Australian society and the sense of impermanence only exacerbates this feeling.…

Some may say, in order to associate with certain people or a particular place, we must identify ourselves. But Peter Skrzynecki’s ‘Immigrant chronicles’ namely the ‘Migrant Hostel’ suggest that to belong we must conform to social expectations and in turn suppress our individuality. The uncertain nature and impermanence of the Hostel creates a metaphoric barrier to inclusion along with the juxtaposition of “Comings and goings” which implies a sense of chaos and instability. This constant changing of the hostel “arrivals of newcomers” averts Skrzynecki from discovering a place of affinity. The poet ultimately accentuates the great burden migrants must undergo in a contradicting society, further reinforcing the distinct sense of inclusion an individual may gain from cultural and societal influences. Furthermore the migrants isolation from the outside world is displayed as a physical symbol of alienation “A barrier at the main gate, sealed from the highway…as it rose and fell like a finger”. This strengthens the migrant’s entrapment and marginalization through bureaucratic oppression.…

    Noughts and Crosses

The story was about white and black people who were called noughts and crosses. I had trouble finding out what noughts and crosses are, but I found that out in prologue after a bit of reading as the pace of the book was very slow. I also kind of had a guess by looking at the book’s cover which displayed a white circle and a cross in black. In the world of noughts and crosses they don’t simply mix and the hostility turns to violence. The world was run by crosses and they treated noughts like nothing and called them blanker. In noughts and crosses world Sephy was a cross, daughter of a rich powerful man who was in politics. Callum was a nought and from my view he didn’t like the crosses to rule over them. Callum and Sephy loved each other but they cannot be together. Callum said to Sephy, “Do you ever wonder if our positions were reversed. I ask. If whites were in charged instead of Crosses.” Callum and Sephy meet each other every evening at the beach and share their thoughts and feelings. This is where I caught the attention of the perspective of the book. The book was written in first person because otherwise I did not have the found Callum’s and Sephy’s emotions between the lines of the book. They were using themselves to tell us what was happening every moment. Therefore, their character was believable and it was gradually developing because Callum and Sephy were going against the world. However, they broke up as their families started to push them. There was a unit called Liberation Militia which brings freedom to noughts and murder crosses, so government agree to their demands. Callum’s dad and his brother Jude was in the Liberation Militia and the exploded a bomb at Dundale shopping centre. Callum wanted noughts and crosses to be regarded equally, but not how the Liberation Militia wants. I was disagreed with Callum’s point of view and I thought Liberation Militia…
