Market research by China’s biggest e-commerce site found men twice as likely as women to be “uncontrollable shopaholics”, meaning that although they spend less time SHOPPING ONLINE, they tend to buy double the amount of items on each haul.
A "field guide" produced by ALIBABA'S Taobao Marketplace also found that at least one million users each spend more than 50,000 yuan (HK$62,000) yearly online. That's an impressive figure. The average urban Chinese resident earned 25,000 yuan last year, according to official statistics.
Researchers identified 12 types of Taobao and Tmall shoppers among the 500 million registered users on the mainland and Greater China - including Hong Kong - and found interesting revelations.
ONLINE SHOPPING has become an around-the-clock activity. More than 22 million Taobao users shop well into the night with peak activity hours between 11pm and 5am, the company said. In Taipei, 72 per cent of “night owl” shoppers are women compared with the 48 per cent average in Greater China.
“Window shoppers” were also more common amongst women than men. Out of five million Taobao shoppers who look but rarely buy, 66 per cent were female and only 34 per cent were male.
The same gender ratio also applied to the nine million shoppers categorised as “bargain hunters”, Taobao said. Most shoppers with a tendency to spend carefully and mostly on BARGAINS were female and between 30 and 34. Most of them lived in Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces.
Hong Kong, increasingly becoming one of the Taobao's biggest MARKETS, ranked behind Taiwan and the mainland as "shopaholics", despite averaging 780 transactions per person each year. The average Taobao user makes 538

On November 10th, 1898, Wilmington, North Carolina became the site of the only coup d’état in American history. The uprising of 1898 was complicated, with deep roots and lasting effects, yet this momentous event has gone largely ignored, relegated to an obscure corner of history where it is remembered only as a petty riot. It is rarely acknowledged as the incident that led to the overthrow of North Carolinian Reconstruction governments in favor of the Democratic assemblies that instituted the infamous Jim Crow laws, leading to a century of segregation. The Democrats of North Carolina staged this uprising as a reaction to the laws placed on them by Reconstruction—laws that were alien, diametrically opposed to the views held by the Old South,…

Thomas More describes an ideal society and government where people maintain high moral standard and live with ultimate freedom and happiness. In the Utopia, the Utopian government strive to fulfill and optimize the benefits and happiness of Utopian citizens. Reasonably, people would describe a safe and happy government as domestically stable and diplomatically powerful so that it obtains admiration and fear from both its citizens and surrounding countries, thus enabling its citizens to live with freedom and pursue the ultimate happiness. However, although the images of Utopian government are attractive and appealing, Machiavelli would reprimand the existence of this ideal government to be absurd and unrealistic because of its unreasonable equality…

The amount of time men and women spend shopping is drastically different. When it comes to shopping, men are more goal-oriented and are usually on a mission. They know what they need to get and have it all planned from before. Therefore, at the store all they have to do is buy it and leave. On the other hand, women are likely to stroll around the mall, try out few things, look around new brands and more. Women go shopping simply to enjoy the overall sensory experience and to gather information that may be used at a later date (Randall). For women, shopping becomes browsing. Fore instance, if they see something they like, they will look at it for more than 15 minutes and will surely buy it. However, with men, they buy what is on their list. For example, when shopping for an LCD, men have the best value, availability and warranty for the LCD figured out already. So all they do at the store is grab it and go. While women linger around at a store and end up buying lot more than actually needed. In general, men spend less time in a store than women do.…

Since time immemorial, men have relied on the women of their lives to do the shopping. And who can blame them? They always have dreaded the prospect of going on shopping trips with the girls so they could never see themselves shopping for their own closet. But somewhere in the mid-1990’s, there have been changes in the consumers’ charts of men’s clothing retailers – the percentage of men buying clothes have gone higher than the women…

Second, thinking about the duration in each shopping, males and females are different. Ladies usually spend longer times shopping. Each time they go, they spend at least three hours visiting from one store to another and asking for any information related to goods and products from the shopkeepers though they do not wish to buy them. Moreover, if there is a special discount, they will buy those products without intention. In contrast, boys usually spend less times shopping. Each time, they just go straight to the stores that they plan from home. They do not pay attention to anything they do not plan to buy at all. Though there is a special discount on the things they do not need, neither will they buy nor they take a glance at those goods on sale.…

Women buy goods and services differently from men. They have more experience as shoppers, feel more passion about what they buy and bear the lion's share of responsibility for purchasing household items. Research conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), including a survey of some 15,000 women and 5,000 men in 22 countries, shows that women make over 70% of the purchases of discretionary consumer goods each year and constitute the fastest-growing global market, even bigger and faster-growing than the consumer economies of China and India combined. And yet women are not pleased with the offerings in many categories, particularly health care, financial services and durable goods.…

There were some differences between men and women in the shopping behavior sections as well. Men are more impulse buyers than women and women use coupons more than men. Neither of these surprised me too much. Women who had homemaker husbands purchased more items on line than in the other categories. I would say that is because they don’t have the time to go shopping in person since they are the bread winner. Also, online shopping is much more convenient and quick.…

Men and women have different views on shopping. Women find it as an exciting, entertaining and fulfilling task, while men find shopping as an unpleasant chore. Women seem to be more fascinated by the idea of fashion and find an identity with their clothing. Men on the other hand, just view it as a way to clothe themselves, and don't find any real meaning in it. The shopping experience as whole for men is basically just find a good deal and you’re done, for women it's more about the quality and the styling. Fashion has mainly been aimed at women, it hasn't been geared towards men much, until the last couple of years.…
