Ideally food should be eaten between 2 and 4 hours before competing. In addition you should drink at least 24-36 ounces of water shortly before an event. While this may seem almost too close to an event studies have shown it's actually good for the body as it helps it get ready for additional water during working out or competing.
In summary if an athlete wants to give themselves the best chance at raising their game they need to have optimum sports nutrition. They must eat the right kinds of provisions, drink plenty of liquid prior to an event as well not to eat to early or just prior to an event.
