This is a tricky situation i understand the staff wants or needs to have the day off, as a manager where do you draw the line. Having worked retail before and being in the same situation, but our day was day after Christmas all employees had to work that day. Everybody work at least 5 hours that day if you did not work it was grounds for termination. I bring that up to say this not everybody will get that day off, the store needs staff to operate. From what I grater from the scenario there might be up to five people that request the weekend off. If Ed would to fill the entire request it would leave him at about half his staff. So if he does that it leaves half-staff which is not fair to the rest of the employees, on the other hand if he does not they could all quit. I would come up with a couple options:
• Option 1 this is a small store and it did say that the job market is tight now and replacing the staff if they quit is not an option. Consequently this option is to use temporary staff services most cities whether big or small have this services available. Temporary staff will send out qualified personal to fill in vacant and can last how long as Ed needs their services. This option the company is going to incur some expense, but it might be the option if some staff leaves too.

Three days assuming the hours are from 8am till 9pm 13 hrs, a day and a total of 39 hours to cover three days. In this option Ed with the help of Karen shift supervisor make the decision what employee would get the day off completely. And who can work ½ day or a couple of hours each day, this decision is not going to please everybody. The request was for the day(s) off which not everybody could have the whole day off. The hardest part would decide which employee(s) gets the day(s) off and who will work some hours at what time they
